Mangaluru, May 7: As the Dakshina Kannada district administration has issued new guidelines restricting people's movement to buy essential commodities to only three hours from Friday and complete lockdown will be imposed on Saturday and Sunday, following a huge spike in Covid-19 cases in the district, large number of people flocked to buy the essential commodities on Friday May 7 morning.
As the district administration permitted the public to buy the essential commodities only between 6 am to 9 am, a huge number of people were seen at grocery shops, fish markets, meat stalls, and other essential items. Interestingly, people made a beeline to the liquor stores as well.
Soon after 9 am, police were seen on the roads regulating public's movement. Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar and the DCPs visited various places in the city to monitor the situation.
It may be recalled that district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary on Thursday chaired an emergency meeting with elected representatives, health officials, and the police personnel and directed them to implement the lockdown orders effectively.
On Saturday and Sunday, the district administration has ordered for the complete lockdown so that essential commodities and commercial establishments will be closed and only HOPCOMS, milk shops, vegetable and fruits selling push-carts will be allowed.
