Centre has allotted more oxygen to Karnataka, says CM Yediyurappa

Bengaluru, May 6 (IANS): The Centre allotted more medical oxygen to Karnataka, which has been gasping for more to treat serious Covid patients in intensive care units, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said on Wednesday.

"Responding to our request for more oxygen supplies, the Central government has rushed 20 tonnes of liquid oxygen, which came from Bahrain," he said in a statement here.

Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting the state in its battle against Covid, Yediyurappa said the Indian Air Force (IAF) had flown 5 containers to Odisha for air-lifting 74 tonnes of oxygen for the state.

"The Centre has also allotted 4 tankers of 20 tonnes capacity each to Karnataka. Two of them reached the Mangaluru port with oxygen," he added.

State-run oil marketing firm Indian Oil Corporation is shipping two containers with 20 tonnes each of liquid oxygen to the state for meeting the surging demand for the life-saving gas.

In a related development, state Industry Minister Jagadish Shettar, who is in-charge of oxygen supplies to hospitals in the state, said he had urged the Centre to permit the state government to use all the gas produced by gas makers in the state.

"I have consulted Central ministers Piyush Goyal and Prahlad Joshi to allot the entire oxygen produced in the state to us for saving lives in the hospitals," he said in a statement here.

The state government has decided to make use of the entire oxygen produced by JSW Industrial Gases Ltd at Ballari.

Though the Jindal Steel Works (JSW) subsidiary produces 130 tonnes of liquid oxygen daily at its Ballari plant, it has been supplying 80 tonnes to the state and sending 50 tonnes to neighbouring Maharashtra, which has been recording more Covid cases.

"As Covid cases in Maharashtra are on decline, Karnataka has requested the Centre to allot the 50 tonnes to the state, where cases have been surging," said Shettar.

Of the 170 oxygen tankers in the state, 68 are used for ferrying the gas to other states, resulting in delays in supplying liquid oxygen to needy hospitals across the state, he noted.

"As railway tankers can ferry large quantity of oxygen at a time at a lesser freight cost, we have requested the Railway Ministry to run more Oxygen Express trains to the state from Odisha," said Shettar.

Present day government only blame the general public for the current situation in India. Our 5 stars hospitals does not have their own Oxygen plant in their hospitals which is surprising to many person like me. Why cant our government take election commission to court for playing with the lives of the people. Why the government allowed Kumbh mela.

I don't believe a word he says. He is only trying to save his masters at Delhi. India has come to this stage due to mismanagement and scams of BJP. Someone has gone to Supreme Court regarding the scams relating to ventilators. 2 lacs ventilators purchased for 8 lacs thus switching off 6 lacs on one ventilator . Millions of dollars of Covid aid donated by the rest of the world lying in the airports for clearance . Is there no end to this incompetence?.

Thumb rule in India is no matter what say thanks to the Supreme leader and worship him, even though it was his duty to see through the crisis. In normal countries he would have been sacked and charged for negligence of his duty.

Very sad this poor man is totally at the beck and call of the Central government. He has absolutely no powers to decide anything. If Modi tells him to sit, he will sit and if he is asked to stand, he will stand. He has been reduced to a helpless situation. His body language also suggests that. Although not an upright person, Yeddyurappa is a good person at heart. A thousand times better than Modi.

Aren't these 20tonnes of liquid oxygen from a Muslim country. How can tejasvi suryaa government accept it when they accuse those 16 muslim from 200 member team in BBMP call center as madrasa recruitment and question their applications. This frustrstes when there are so many people from all communities working together to come out of this situation, masjids converted to covid centers, muslim youths cremating bodies from all communities as per their rituals and we hear such comments from an MP and MLAs of our state. Hoping this attitude changes and they work together to fight this.

Is 20 T enough. SC is negotiating 700T for Delhi alone. 20T seems peanuts. After rightfully asking centre for Oxygen was Yediurappa forced to makethe above statement absolving centre?

while both centre & your team was busy toppling govt. across country and Ignoring corona while power was your priority, even then it's been an year you're in power get you acts right now atleast. I don't think it's favour done by centre - people are paying tax, elected this jumla sarkar, either KSRTC in strike , bank employees are unhappy or medicos are unhappy and now worst nightmare for everyone in the state
