Mangaluru: Returning from Gulf, youth finds mobile vegetable trade profitable

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 5: Sharat Kumar from Kodman village, Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada district was working as an electrician at Qatar. He had planned to settle down with parents and run some self-employment business after performing the marriage of his sister. Lockdown provided him with a perfect opportunity to implement the plan.

Sharat, on his return from abroad in December 2019, planned to operate a mobile canteen. He also acquired a second hand Maruti Omni van costing Rs 60,000 for this purpose. By then the government announced lockdown. He had spent whatever money he had by then. He saw that several shops in his town had closed down one after the other. He saw that there was no provision to operate a mobile canteen. He also observed that many people were finding it hard to go out and bring vegetables. The idea of going to the doorsteps of customers with vegetables appealed to him.

Sharat finds new routes to sell his vegetables every day. His friends have joined hands with him in this business. As the business is running well, he does not regret the change in profession. He says that even in the second wave of coronavirus, his business is running properly. Sharat's self-confidence has got a shot in the arm as he could settle down in his home village and also find an employment that supports him and his family.

Sharat buys vegetables not only from Mangaluru but also Hassan and Chikkamagaluru on a large scale. He has been able to clear the loan raised for performing his sister's marriage. After operating his vegetable business till the afternoon, he works as electrician. Sharat is pleased that he could make his parents happy by settling down here, and also for the fact that he is able to earn well.

Such mobile trade runs only during emergency or like lockdown period only. Hundreds jobless locals and gulf returnees youths like sharath have tried their luck in last year covid wave but failed to sustain once the lock down period broke down... They should take it easily assuming as a temporary business and try to find concrete job for their future survival.

Moshu mangalore ,you are mistaken that it fails when once the lock down is not more there. It depends how one is flexible with work.Just have to adjust to the situation ,then it will be successful Many people from village side have no ti,me to go to market or have no proper vehicle ,etc. Then they are happy if one comes with some veg or some other things. How previously fishers used to go to people in village and sell fish and in exchange used to get rice or vegetable in exchange when no money was there.Only had to carry and walk .One have to learn to go a new way.One is his own chef,no need of depending others when one streik you suffer ,etc.

Very good move. I support him. Self depending. Hard work always good return. Mangalore city many big flats have come up. If you supply fresh vegetables daily from one flats to another and keeping exact time, Lockdown or normal days keep the time.surely you will come up. Best of luck sir.

Since I lived in Mumbai and Kinnigoli, I know the price of vegetables there. Now I find very good vegetables in Bangalore at almost half the price of Kinnigoli and Mumbai, and the reason is most of the vegetables are coming to Bangalore are from Hassan, where the traders get at half the price. Suppose a vegetable in retail is sold in Mangalore. at Rs 80 per kg, one can imagine the profit when it is bought at Rs 20 in Hassan. Sharat knows the trick of the trade. Wish him all the best in his endeavour.

Jobs, employment of any kind provided it is legal in nature provides food on the table and gives dignity to human beings. So I wish all my best wishes to any person who works in a self employed way of life or not! Selling vegetables is as important as working in a bank or teaching. Vegetables and fruits are blessings of Mother Nature and is good for health . So my warm applause for Sharat Kumar!
