Mangaluru, May 3: The total number of coronavirus-infected people in the district has crossed 40,000. People of different age groups have recovered from this infection but children are in the forefront as far as faster recovery from the disease is concerned.
Last year, when COVID19 spread its tentacles in the district, the health department had advised the seniors, children, people suffering from other health complications and the pregnant women to be more careful. Because of this, even when lockdown was withdrawn in phases, aged people and children were barred from entering high density areas.

During the first and second wave of the pandemic, Covid infection was found among 622 children in total. Except a baby girl and two male children, all the others have recovered. In the children in the age group of 5 to 10 years, 797 were infected with coronavirus and all the children have recovered fully. In the 11 to 15 age group, 1,015 children were affected. Health department officials say that all the children except a boy have recovered.
As per the health department data, most of the death have occurred in the 61-70 age group. As many as 233 persons belonging to this group have lost their battle with the Covid. A total of 166 persons in the age group of 71 to 80 also lost their lives. If we consider the deaths gender-wise, deaths of men is about twice that of women. As per the information available till last Friday, 757 corona-related deaths have occurred so far. As many as 226 among them are women and 531 men.
The health department says that in the second wave, primary school children are more secure. Many in the age group of 16 and 30 contracted the infection. When PU classes were on, after observing that one student was infected, all were tested and infection was detected in several students at the early stage. Even though they were asked to be in isolation they hoodwinked the officials, moved around in public places and thus spread the infection to others as well as elders in their own families.
"Among the infected people of the middle age group the health complications were more. This could be on account of late admission into hospitals. Therefore, when positive cases among children are found, we take more care, carve out containment zones, and thus regulate the spread of the disease," the officials explained.
