Mangaluru: 'No need to panic about delayed second dose' - DC Dr Rajendra

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 3: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC) Dr Rajendra K V, has advised the people not to become panicky about the delayed second dose. He said that the second dose of vaccination can be administered even after six to eight weeks.

The DC revealed that Covaxin supply is limited and the district does not have its stock now. He said that when the stock arrives, those who have to be vaccinated will be informed. "Even in respect of Covishield second dose, we will inform the people to visit the centre, based on the availability of the doses. The health department will give this information. For the first dose, there is no provision for on the spot registration. They have to compulsorily get registered on line and visit the centres based on appointments," he clarified.

With the number of corona infected persons on the rise in the district, more and more people are coming forward to get vaccinated. Because of shortage of vaccine, the district administration has made it compulsory for the people getting first dose to register themselves online in advance.

Those who had got the first vaccinations four to five weeks hack are returning after visiting the centres. On Sunday, when the officials at the Wenlock Hospital told the people that there was no stock for second doses, a few people took the staff to task before returning home in frustration.

A total of seven containment zones have been created in the district, two each in Dharmasthala Bantwal and Mangaluru, and one in Beltangady. Out of 20 inmates of an old age home at Hosabettu, Surathkal, eight have been infected. Those having serious problems have been admitted into hospital and the balance have been separated from the rest and asked to stay in the old age home.

In Dharmasthala, out of ten cluster houses, 17 positive cases have been reported. They have been put together and made into containment zone. Containment zones have also been created in Kadeshwalya in Bantwal (11 cases), Kukkila (10), Jeppinamogaru Mangaluru (7), Posavalike Dharmasthala (6) and Shishila (6 cases).

The health department said that the district is expecting to get more doses of the vaccines and the district currently has only 2,500 doses. The department stated that 508 people were vaccinated on Sunday.

About the need for Remdesivir and oxygen, the private hospitals have to register their demand in the KPME portal. Every day, with the SRF ID demand for medicine has to be submitted. Unregistered hospitals cannot place demand online and they cannot be supplied with the items. No demand received directly from organizations and institutions will be entertained. Supply will be made for demands made through the web links, the department added.

As a precautionary measure, to ensure that the covidd-19 patients to not face dearth of beds in the district, 50 percent of available beds in private hospitals and 75 percent beds in private medical college hospitals have been reserved for them. If there is any Covid-related problem, nodal officers of the following hospitals can be contacted. Ullal Sahara Hospital (Niranjan - technical assistant to DC, 9591225763), Tejaswini Hospital Kadri (Praveen, senior assistant director of horticulture (9449258204), the department added.

@Monty Doctor certainly government or anybody would wish to ramp up the capacity so that the demand for vaccine could be met. Unfortunately there is something called IPR(Intellectual Property Rights) which comes in the way. In case of SI, IPR is held by Astra Zenaca. As far as Covax is concerned the vaccine is developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration withdrawal ICMR, a government body. But the IPR with respect to Covax is shrouded in mistery and public is not aware as to who holds it. Unless the rights are given you cannot produce vaccine even if you know how to produce it because it will cause patent infringement. This is the main reason why others cannot manufacture unless the rights are transferred. At least we expected that government should have taken proactive steps for ramping up indian vaccine Covax seeing the population of India. But for the authorities this was not a priority.

This is what Pfizer says: "Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said people will "likely" need a third dose of a Covid-19 vaccine within 12 months of getting fully vaccinated. He also said it's possible people will need to get vaccinated against the coronavirus annually"

@Santan please do a basic calculation. Production of vaccine is 7 crore plus 1 crore per month. Requirement of vaccine is 180 crore considering 2 doses for 90 crore eligible people( above 18+) . So how many months will it take to meet this requirement? This is the answer for your question why shortage?

If govt. had given permission to more companies ( there are a large number who already manufacturer many other vaccines) and enhanced the capacity of SII and Bharat Biotech it would definitely be possible to vaccnate all those who are willing and those who are not seropositive (those who already have antibodies). Govt. definitely knows the population numbers of our country better than you and me. It is the lack of foresight, negligence and lack of wisdom that we are facing this unfortunate situation.

by the time the vaccine is made freely availale, majority of the affected people will have left this world. So please dont worry, they will not need the vaccine. We have lost all dignity in our talks. Adar Poonawala left for UK with his family because he could not raise his voice against some Ministers and influential people. In his statement he says, he had to leave India because he could not bear it. So Covishield is in the air ???

There is shortage of vaccines, oximeters and beds even in DK. No timely action is taken and you say don't panic. The worst part is no one is even bothered if lockdown rules are being followed . There are a few collges who have still called faculty to work. What action has been taken? This is just ridiculous. When majority of them who are dying are without any other underlying symptoms. Let good sense prevail for God sake.

That means Monty sir, these people only made money by selling @250/350 etc Till august, duration from the first dose to second dose will be much wider....whereas its only 6 to 8 weeks another two weeks extra at the most. Secondly, i heard that after taking the two successful doses, vaccine will be effective only upto 9 months. Then its of no use...

All these "mahaan aatmaas" are busy covering up the greatest sin of the "one who shall not be named". SII's Poonawala has said the vaccine shortage in India will continue till July because he had NO ORDERS. Whose responsibility was it to place the vaccine orders for Indians? Why doesn't the man, who other wise is everready to take credit for even the smallest thing, come forward and accept his mistake ? How many more will die because he himself became complacent and was happy to see "large crowds". The responsibility for this mess is his & his alone and the Supreme Court takes serious cognizance of this and punishes the man responsible.

SII can manufacture 7 crore vaccines per month and Indian Biotech can manufacture one crore per month. Then why shortage of vaccines ? Adar Poonawala, a born billionaire, son of SII institute's owner Cyrus Poonawala, according to reports went to London, because his life was threatened. Adar said he did not get orders for purchase of vaccines, hence, there is shortage. There was a fire in SII. Also, it is said Govt of India has not spent any money on the covaxin research, which it is said was funded by Bill and Milind Gates foundation. I am writing this as per reports, but do not know the authenticity.
