Udupi: With lockdown relaxed, crowds gather to stock up on groceries

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, May 2: On Sunday, May 2 morning, it was seen at Santhekatte near here that the people had thrown all precautions and corona guidelines to winds and mobbed the place to vie with the others to buy vegetables.

As per the guidelines stipulated by the government as a measure to contain the spread of the pandemic, weekly markets cannot function. But the vegetable vendors were seen spreading their vegetables by the roadside just outside the weekly market area and started their business.

The people also forgot about the need to be cautious when buying vegetables because of the risks involved.

A few police personnel were deployed at the spot but they failed to control the mob. Even though the policeman announced through the mikes about the need to maintain social distance and follow other rules, the people were not listening. The problem was compounded by the fact that municipal officials did not visit the spot.

Allegedly, when a citizen visited the municipal office to complain about this situation, he was threatened by a municipal employee.

Relaxation of 4 hours is more than enough to buy essentials; why people need to go every day to buy groceries? This relaxation seems to be a subtle attempt to appease a section of people for obvious reasons!

This is OK for those who have fat bank balance. Have you ever thought of daily wage earners. Show some humanity.

Honestly maintaining social distancing & grocery shopping during current restriction is not easy. Everyone wants to be safe, at the same time buy all the required items + extras and go home as soon as possible, who knows if suddenly PM or CM announces complete lock-down tonight. Our Government loves giving us Surprises. So we can neither blame the public for crowding the markets or the police for not controlling the crowd. Foolish Government officials needed to think & organize markets days for certain places on particular days.

This sort of relaxation will give a pretext to many people to come out on the roads throughout the day! Purpose of lockdown is defeated!
