Mangaluru, May 1: Families of police personnel serving under Mangaluru city police commissionerate have taken up the initiative of stitching washable mask for 2,000 police personnel at police lane, Pandeshwar.

As many eight women associated with Jnanodhaya Mahila Mandala, Police Welfare Centre at police lane, Pandeshwar, are stitching washable masks. The initiative is led by Bhageerathi, Susheela, Sunitha, Poornima, Poornima Ravi Kumar, Nethravathi, Tanuja and Asha.

The women started stitching masks from April 24 with a target of stitching 10,000 masks. They stitch 75-80 masks per day and so far have stitched 3,000 masks.

Police commissioner N Shashi Kumar, who visited the visited the women and took a look at the masks, said, “The families of police personnel were earning money through embroidery, art and tailoring. Due to lockdown, they were unable to earn money. There are 2,000 police personnel under Mangaluru commissionerate limits. We decided to give five masks to each police officer which takes the count up to 10,000. The families of the police personnel have voluntarily come forward to stitch washable masks for the cops. When we see them wearing different coloured masks, it looks odd with the uniform. Hence, we gave khaki materials required for the mask and the women are stitching the same. After reaching the target of 10,000, we will place orders depending upon the requirement of masks. The group decided to stitch the masks for free for the police personnel as they are work relentlessly during this pandemic. But we will give certain amount for the women as appreciation.”

Someone needs to remind them that a filter is required in the mask which can filter any particle less than .01 microns. The only masks that helpful are N95 or Masks with P100 filters. Even with N95 or P100 filters it is possible that the virus will sneak through. A thorough fit to face mask is always necessary. People also need to be made aware that virus can spread through the eyes. I have seen even health staff working in hospitals wearing surgical masks. Surgical masks are no good. They can't protect you, but can reduce the distance aerosols can spread if the person is infected while he speaks or breathes. The basics are not being followed.

Sameer Riyadh, one side you r right that these masks made out of simple cloth are not meant to wear against corona virus. But I say better than nothing. But surgical masks as we say Op masks can be worn against virus. Here only such op masks or FFP2masks are allowed,no stoff masks.Because these have special filter inside with some small filter to let out the air.Such masks are now everywhere allowed by govt and officials. But you cant wash them ,Only hang in air after use,and discarded after using about 5-6times.Surgical or Op masks are allowed during Operation ,thatswhy why not here?I appriciate the work done by women for Police. Please try to stich masks with a filter within.

If they make medically approved system, then it's ok. Otherwise atleast 3 layer system. If it's only made of cloth , then I think it won't help much to over come Corona virus. But I appreciate the interest of these Police families.
