Mangaluru/Udupi, Apr 30: The district administration of Dakshina Kannada has made 4,884 beds ready for treatment of Covid patients. NITK and ESI hospital at Kadri Shivabagh are converted as Covid centers.
NITK and ESI have 100 and 75 bed capacity respectively. Necessary facilities including drinking water are provided by the health department. There is a possibility of converting Morarji Desai School as Covid care center. If the need arises schools, hostels managed by the social welfare department and hotels will be converted as Covid care centers. Even if this is not sufficient, the district administration is mulling of taking additional beds available in Ayurvedic, homeopathic medical college hospitals and private hospitals.

Doctors and nurses are being deployed at Covid care centers. Patients who do not have any symptoms will be treated for at least 10 days in these centers.
During the first wave of Covid many people got admitted to hospitals and got themselves treated. Very few people were in home isolation. However, this time around 80% of the people are in home isolation. As per the latest reports 887 people are getting treated at hospitals while 3,249 are in home quarantine.
In the district of Udupi 2,000 beds are made ready for treatment of Covid patients. The district administration says that there are 2,000 beds for Covid patients in the district. Out of this 500 beds are in use. So there is no shortage of beds at present. The situation is being monitored on a daily basis. Remdesivir shortage is also fulfilled.
The oxygen supply unit started functioning at Belapu three days ago. Manipal hospital has its own oxygen unit. Oxygen is supplied to Dr T M A Pai Hospital from Mangaluru. The district hospital has got an oxygen unit of 6 KL capacity. For the rest of the hospitals the oxygen will be supplied from Belapu.
As the Covid is spreading fast, the number of citizens arriving to take vaccines is increasing. 5,000 vaccines were supplied on Monday. 12,000 vaccines arrived on Tuesday. On Wednesday, 10,000 vaccines were distributed. Covaxin will arrive soon as per the information shared by deputy commissioner (DC) Jagadeesha.
DMO Dr Sudhir Chandra Sooda says that six community health centers of the district are also ready for the Covid patients. Every center has 30 beds and they will be used as per necessity.
DC Jagadeesha said, "There are 900 oxygen beds in the districts. In addition, there are other beds also. As much as 75% of beds in private hospitals are given to the government. If any private hospital says no beds, citizens should contact DMO Dr Sudhir Chandra Sooda or Nodal officer Dr Prashanth Bhat. Helpline is opened at taluk level. Citizens can get medical treatment through this helpline."
