Mangaluru, Apr 28: On Tuesday April 27, roads in the district were busy with people who were quickly making purchases to stock up during the lockdown and doing things which they need to, as the 14-day long lockdown period in Karnataka began on the night of April 27. Provision stores, banks, vegetable shops, and ATMs witnessed heavy transactions.
On Wednesday April 28 morning, even though the government has given four hours’ time between 6 am and 10 am for purchase of essentials, very few people came out to buy fresh vegetables, fish, provisions etc.
Traffic was minimum in most of the roads and the streets were devoid of the routine crowd. Buses and auto rickshaws are off the road and government buses are also not operational.
Policemen are keeping vigil to ensure that the people do not come out unnecessarily.
Mangaluru city police have set up checkposts at 54 places in the city, to stop unnecessary movement of vehicles. A total of 1,000 police personnel have been used for bandobast duties.
The police will file case against people seen unnecessarily moving on the roads, said police commissioner N Shashi Kumar had informed on Tuesday urging the general public to extend full cooperation during the lockdown.
