Mangaluru: 12-year jail term for college student rape, robbery accused

Mangaluru, Apr 28: A court here has handed down 12 years of rigorous imprisonment to a youth accused of raping a college student and divesting her of the money she had with her. This incident had happened on February 9, 2019.

Judge of the additional sessions court which also functions as the court for Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) cases, Savitri V Bhat, passed a judgement pronouncing 12 years six months jail term for the accused, Nazeer (35) from Valachil. He also has been imposed with a fine of Rs 1.10 lac for the heinous act. On behalf of the prosecution, special public prosecutor for POCSO, Venkataramana Swamy C, had placed arguments.

As the rape charge has been conclusively proved, Nazeer has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment, and imposed with a fine of Rs 1.10 lac. For posing death threat, six months of rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 3 000 have been imposed. The other accused, Shamir, has been given six months rigorous imprisonment for robbing the student. He has been fined Rs 3,000.

Out of the fine amount, one lac rupees has been instructed to be disbursed to the victim. Moreover, a sum of Rs two lac has been ordered to be paid as compensation through Karnataka Legal Services Authority.
