Curfew fails to deter marriages on auspicious day in Mangaluru, Udupi

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi (SP)

Mangaluru/Udupi, Apr 26: A number of marriages were performed on Sunday April 25 after obtaining permission from the respective tahsildars, in spite of the weekend curfew in force. Dakshina Kannada district witnessed 372 marriages being performed on a single day while 354 couples entered wedded life in Udupi district. Sunday was an auspicious day as per Hindu calendar for various ceremonies, which became available after a gap of about two months, a period during which auspicious occasions were not held.

As many as 82 marriages were solemnized in the city. Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat chief executive officer Dr Kumar, said that 372 marriages were permitted to be held in the district on Sunday. A total of 644 marriages were performed in Udupi district on April 24 and 25.

Likewise, with advance permission from the district administration, 354 marriages were conducted in Udupi district on Sunday. The organizers of these marriages followed COVID 19 guidelines and limited the total number of guests to 50. Several of these marriages were beamed online to facilitate guests and relatives who could not attend them on account of restrictions on the attendance.

The police could see that the vehicles were related to marriages by their flower decorations. At a few places, the police also checked passes and other documents before allowing the vehicles to move ahead. Officials visited the marriage venues, which in some cases happened to the courtyards of the residences of the families of brides.

As per news reports, somewhere in Chitradurga when police went to check on a large wedding crowd, they were assaulted & their vehicle stoned by angry villagers, this is how our ignorant and arrogant people behave despite strict instructions given for their own welfare!

We shouldn't be surprised then if Covid cases keep going up. Yes, Government should put a stop to ALL events, but what about the moral responsibility of the general public. It is hard to believe that at this time of crisis, people still think weddings are more important. Let us Hope & Pray that someone's Auspicious day doesn't become another's death sentence.

Lockdown means there should be absolutely no exceptions except emergencies and medical; otherwise, it makes no sense! This is just a people pleasing exercise and those at so much haste to get married are putting somebody's life at risk unknowingly, this is tragic! Those who have lost a loved one suffer and die of this only will know the pain! Ground level situation is really scary! Germany, the third wave is creating havoc and everything has been locked down till May end!

When so many marriages held in DK and Udipi only one mass marriage held at Punjalkatte is highlighted only because of political blame. Keep aside your political affiliation when some one is doing a good job please.

Marriage is only for Sex? u must be a real dumb gurka.. If your children were getting married and u had all preparations done from months, u would not comment this way. i cancelled last year and not in a position to cancel it this year. 50 invitees is still fine, will go ahead.Yes, precautions should be taken and those who scheduled the functions and have got permission must have done it.

SAN, first understand what a complete lockdown means (only exception here is emergency services), and then put forward your personal woes, which are not at all an exception to a "complete lockdown"! The marriage can very well be registered & all rituals postponed for a later date! In a country where religious dogmas override common sense and science the situation will never improve!

I have no comment on auspicious day. But, I am just writing here what our ex president Abdul Kalam replied to Pramod Mahajan, who asked the former to select an auspicious day for his oath taking. Abdul Kalam replied "the day the sun does not rise or the day sun does not set, is only the inauspicious day for me. All other days are auspicious to me".
