Karnataka seeks 1,500 tonnes oxygen supply daily from Centre

Bengaluru, Apr 22 (IANS): Karnataka on Wednesday urged the Central government to rush 1,500 tonne of medical oxygen daily to the state for treating Covid patients in state-run and private hospitals.

"Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has written to the Centre to supply 1,500 tonne of medical oxygen daily to overcome its shortage in our hospitals where demand for the gas been rising due to surge in Covid cases," state Health Minister K. Sudhakar told reporters here.

Hoping for an early response from the Centre, he said though 300 tonnes of oxygen has been allotted to the state, the need had doubled due to the surge in cases.

"We need about 600 tonnes of oxygen daily this month and 1,500 tonne in May as Covid cases are expected to peak in the coming weeks," he said.

Referring to anxiety among the people to get admitted to hospital soon after they test Covid positive, the minister said 95 per cent of the cases does not require hospitalisation, as they can be quarantined at home and treated for mild symptoms.

"Patients with mild symptoms or asymptomatic can be isolated at home or in hotels and Covid care centres, set up in cities and towns across the state. Our doctors are visiting home-isolated patients to counsel them on treatment. Only patients with severe symptoms or comorbidities need to be admitted in hospitals, as they require oxygen or ventilator and care," said Sudhakar.

According to the state health bulletin, a record 23,558 new cases were registered in a day, taking the state's Covid tally to 12,22,202, including 1,76,188 active cases.

The infection claimed 116 lives across the state, taking the death toll to 13,762.

Allaying fears about shortage of beds for admitting severe Covid patients, the minister said 1,400 beds have been reserved in private medical colleges in Bengaluru for admitting serious cases on priority.

"In all, 9,851 beds in state-run and private hospitals across the state have been earmarked for treating severe Covid patients. Though positivity rate rose to 15.47 per cent, case fatality rate was 0.49 per cent on Tuesday," he said.

According to an estimate by Dr Kamna Kakkar, senior resident, Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at PGIMS Rohtak, who has been treating Covid-19 patients, a single patient on high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) uses over 86,000 litres of oxygen per day. “It is certainly a lot of oxygen but it saves lives,” Kakkar told ThePrint. “Let’s say there is a patient on HFNC who requires 100 per cent oxygen at 60 litres per minute. So, that would amount to 3,600 litres of oxygen required per hour.” She, however, highlighted that if 100 people are infected by Covid, 90 do not need oxygen. “Just 10 need oxygen. Out of 10, one or two might need support on HFNC or ventilators. The burden on oxygen supply will surge phenomenally if cases rise to 1 lakh per day,” she said. is 1500 tonne enough for 6 crore population?

The Central government has ordered setting up of 162 oxygen plants attached to the district hospitals across the country post corona pandemic last year at a total cost of 200 crores only. However no plant is set up or those two or three which are set up are not functional. However Karnataka cannot draw any comfort and hope for better days as the double engine government at the Center did not allot any oxygen plant to the state. The lions share went to UP. The second part of the engine at the state as usual was busy with commission grabbing through RTGS/NEFT, tender rigging ,sex CDs etc., leaving little time to lobby for our share.

If Karnataka needs 1500 metric tons of oxygen per day what will be the consumption of the entire country? 20000 metric tons per day? Where from this much quantity arranged? Please do not try to be greedy and hoard oxygen. It is in short supply and supply logistics are dismal. Be rational in estimating the requirements and make judicious use of oxygen so that everyone in need of oxygen gets it and life is saved.

They're asking supply of industrial oxygen now because the medical oxygen which was procured was for the caseload of January. The govt. never planned this. Even our health ministet denied that there was shortage of oxygen. There is infact a large shortage of oxygen.

People in India say, even if the petrol price goes up to Rs.500, they will vote Modi. Today, nation is suffering owing to inaction of Modi in oxygen supply. He is only good to give oxygen filled speeches. Even if he is not going to act on the need of the hour, people will vote for him, of course, if they are alive. Instead of PM, HM and Health minister talking on oxygen and Remdesivir, finance minister assured ramp up in the supply. Why ? PM and HM are busy in rallies.
