Mangaluru, Apr 21: BJP leader Vedavyas Kamath, MLA of Mangaluru South constituency announced that the city corporation will be bearing the cost involved in performing the last rites of the person who passed away due to coronavirus infection. “The expenses of performing the last rites of the person who dies of coronavirus infection will be borne by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC),” Kamath said.
A discussion on the subject was held in a meeting chaired by state BJP president and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel at the MP’s war room on Tuesday.
There are two electric crematoriums in MCC limits. As the electric crematorium in Boloor is out of order due to technical reasons, bodies are cremated with the help of a funeral pyre. Performing of the last rites generally costs Rs 8,000, however, the amount has been brought down to Rs 5,500. Reportedly, there were complaints saying that double the amount is being charged due to coronavirus. A discussion on this matter was held with the mayor and commissioner. Now, MCC has been directed to bear the cost of the last rites. This initiative by the MLA, MP and mayor has received a positive response from the public.
