Udupi: Farmers devastated as Shankarapura jasmine price crashes

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Apr 17: Shankarapura near Katapady is well known for its jasmine flowers which have high demand. However, under attack from coronavirus, several things have changed, and for the Shankarapura jasmine cultivators, the days are no more the same. Battered by the advances of the pandemic the jasmine has taken a huge beating.

Shankarapura jasmines are known as the flowers which command prices of gold. Now, its price has suddenly slid down in the market, leaving the farmers devastated. Shankarapura jasmine, which is not only famous in the district but also in Mumbai and other cities, is so much in demand that the people cannot imagine functions and temple procedures without their formidable presence.

Jasmines are used freely in temple festivals, Naga Pua, Dakkebali, Bhoota Kola, marriage and other programmes. For the last two years, the price of this jasmine had touched a level of Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per Atte (four bunches of artistically woven jasmine garlands).

Now, this price has collapsed to Rs 150 per Atte. On one hand, because of coronavirus, functions have become very less. At the same time, production has gone up, and exports to Mumbai and foreign countries have stopped. As a result of these developments, the flower commands a nominal price now, which does not even cover the cost of cultivation and labour involved with the making of the garlands.

Government should not give any further assistance or monetary compensations. There is profit and loss in every business, inspite of your best efforts. When you invest in any business, you should be prepared to face a loss too. One can not say, I have put all my savings on black jack and lost. Govt should compensate for my losses!!!

Fluctuations in rate happens. It is based on demand and supply. But farmers are devastated is not a good statement. It is not a Industry whereby several workers are working and salaries are to be paid end of the month. Generally only family members with one or two workers employed to do this work. If anyone depends only on outside workers, then surely they are devastated.

Very good comment Charles aab. We never utter a single word when we gained profit through so many years. Now, we have to adjust according to the situation. To tell you frankly, its not affected that much because everywhere functions, jaathres, religious functions, weddings were held and now also going on....

Jossey sir, for one person's marriage, how much mallige i need? And how many mallige growers will be benefitted because of protocol? Guests allowed are 50 maximum. If it was like before, all ladies would be given one piece of jasmine and people like you, who attend the marriage could have been welcomed by mallige garlands. Now Maharashtra, Kerala, Washington, Mumbai, Kuwait, KSA, guests are unable to come.....

Jossey, if any person wants to help these jasmine growers by getting married and purchasing all flowers in the market paying higher price, one can do. That can help for one day. But, the problem seems to be a complete season or till the price goes up by demand. No person can marry each and everyday, is it not ?

People of Shankerapura are used to extreme fluctuation in price for flowers and have a history of nearly 100 years behind them. They have survived WW 2, Indo-Pak -China wars, gulf war etc. They even have alternate means of income too. This is only a short term hiccup and they will survive and wade through it.

Dr.S.Kamath, Mumbai...this has been done long back nearly 45 years back. But it was not successful. May be because of chemical based perfumes are more cheaper than extracting essential oils from these flowers.

Government need to understand the difficulties of Jasmine growers. The distribution of Jasmine flowers in to the market need to be improved by selling jasmine to well to do organized customers; by exporting and by supplying to North India for more favorable prices. It is time that State Government take over the distribution of Jasmine flowers to the market and pay proper price to the jasmine growers.
