Udupi, Apr 16: “The DPR is ready for a sewerage development project at an estimated cost of Rs 250 crore and will go to the government for approval if technically approved by the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board. Rs 5,000 crore for underground drainage works have been already announced in the State Budget. DPR is also prepared for UGD at Manipal and Santhekatte. The drainage works in other parts of the city will begin afterwards,” said MLA Raghupathi Bhat.
He was speaking at a meeting concerning UGD works held at the council auditorium on Friday. The officials of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board gave an explanation about the project in the meeting.
“There are 2,800 manholes in the city and another 5,500 manholes will come up soon. There are four wet wells and another five will be constructed soon. The current pipelines are eight meters deep and there are plans to lay them at a depth of four meters,” said MLA Raghupathi Bhat talking to media persons. He also informed that Indrani river will be cleaned once the UGD project is completed.
“There are 11 septic tanks in the city. The sewage capacity of the current sewage treatment plant is 12 MLD. 150 kilometres long pipes are being laid along with the previous 100 kilometres pipes.”
Council engineer, Mohan Raj said that there is no problem to install septic tanks on government land. But there will be hurdles to install them on private land. Therefore, setting up of septic tanks should be reduced as far as possible and suggested that a vertical survey be carried out in the city.
“The wet wells at Matadabettu, Kinnimulki and Kappettu are being upgraded. Two new wet wells will be constructed along the Malpe road to solve the technical issues,” said water board executive engineer, Chandrashekar
M D Ravi, assistant engineer, municipal council president, Sumitra R Nayak, council commissioner, Udaya Shetty and officials were present.
