Udupi, Apr 10: The Hindu burial ground and crematorium at Indrali is not in operation for a year. The public has urged the administration to take action for proper maintenance of the same. The crematorium at Beedinagudde is the only one that functions properly.

The mortal remains of the people of Manipal, Parkala, Herga, Athradi and Badagubettu, who are dependent on the Indrali crematorium have to be taken to Beedinagudde for the final rites. Indrali crematorium was developed at a cost of Rs 19.35 lac in 2016. At a time, two dead bodies could be burnt. However, now due to improper maintenance by the city municipality, it is in a dilapidated state.

As the Indrali crematorium is not working, the one at Beedinagudde gets eight to ten mortal remains of people every day. If the load is more, they need to be sent to crematoriums at Malpe or Udyavara. Indrali crematorium is vast and is convenient as it is just by the side of NH of Udupi-Manipal. The chambers to burn the mortal remains needs to be increased to six according to locals.

It is the responsibility of the city municipality to maintain the crematorium at Indrali. At present, Rs 1.23 crore is reserved in the budget for the development of crematoriums within city limits. Indrali crematorium should be developed out of this fund urge the general public.

Sumitra Nayak, president of Udupi city municipality says, "A project will be formed to develop the Indrali crematorium in a systematic manner. I have already visited the crematorium and done the spot inspection. A meeting will be held on April 12 and a suitable decision will be taken."
