Mangaluru, Apr 8: Days after Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) opposition leader A C Vinayaraj demanded a probe into the fire mishap at the Pachanady dry waste recycling unit, BJP chief whip and corporator Sudhir Shetty Kannur said, "The fire mishap at Pachanady dry waste recycling unit is not an administrative failure of the MCC but an accident. Such fire mishaps have been reported several times. Immediately after the incident, the local corporator brought the issue to the notice of the MLA and the mayor. The mayor, deputy commissioner and MCC commissioner visited the spot and stayed there till late night till the fire was doused.
He was addressing a press meet at the district BJP office here on Thursday April 8.
“A private firm handles the dry waste recycling unit. The company has to insure itself and not the MCC. Though their tender date expired, their contract has been extended by three months. The corporator has taken an initiative to develop the Pachanady dumping yard under the 15th Finance Commission and it is under the process of tender,” he said.
He also said that though the fund was allotted for the development of basic facilities, it was diverted to the work of road by the then corporator Kavitha Sanil.
“Only 100-tonne waste is being segregated there but 250-300 tonne waste is being collected daily. Nearly 50 to 170 tonnes of waste from Ullal town municipal council is being dumped in Pachanady. MLA UT Khader should initiate measures to start recycling at Ullal, so that waste from Ullal does nt come to the dumping yard at Pachanady,” he said.
Corporators Sangeeta Naik, Sandeep Garodi, and Radhakrishna were present.
