Mangaluru: Ready mix trucks spilling concrete on roads pose danger for commuters

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 8: During summer months, construction activities gain momentum. As there is no rain, concrete-related works are undertaken during this period. Taking advantage of the boom in these activities, ready mix concrete trucks are seen moving on the roads all through the day and night. These trucks pose a few dangers.

These trucks are normally driven at high speeds as the concrete mix has to reach the destination fast. Mainly the trucks which move on steep uphill road keep spilling concrete on the road. This poses serious risk to motorbikes and scooter riders as there is a chance of them tripping and falling to the road. Vehicles following these ready mix trucks also face danger.

As the drivers of these trucks are normally unaware about the dropping of concrete to the road, they do not remove them. If these heaps remain there for long, the concrete mass becomes harder that cannot be removed from the road Vehicles moving on this one to two inches of concrete can lose their balance and fall down. The result can be very dangerous, the people feel.

These ready mix concrete trucks also pose another problem. At many places it is seen that the concrete trucks are cleaned by the roadside at the end of the day. Water is sprayed into the concrete container, and the remaining concrete is poured by the roadside. This water flows on the road and becomes hardened, and poses problems and proves to be dangerous for vehicle riders.

Assistant commissioner of police (traffic), MA Natarajan, has requested the people to take a photograph of the t ruck and send it to the police along with the truck registration number so that either a penalty can be imposed or the spots can be cleaned by the concerned. He sought cooperation from the people.

This problem is not new. Trucks overfill with Mix and travel with high speed, vibrating and spilling Mix. Few years back I alone stopped 2 Mixer Trucks near Baithurly-Paldane junction with my worker help. So many bikers passed by but none helped Me when requested, but Owner of Aswin Bar in Paldane came to my help and we stopped 7 trucks . I called S I Suresh and ASI Muddy who came with Police Crew. Already 4 Bikes were fallen with one major Injury to Young Girl. We removed the keys of vehicles until the drivers got down , removed spilled Concrete and swept the road, and made them to wash the road with water from Mixer Tank. Then the trucks were taken to Kankanady Station and given a good Penalty. These trucks were taking Concrete to Expert College Construction. These North Indian Drivers are so arrogant that they do not even care when telling them that Concrete is spilling, Their answer is " Mai kya karunga, marne wala martha hai" If a Bike is parked on road illegally, it will be Towed fast without concern. But Two Water Tanks were kept on middle of Road on Bejai Church road (near Petrol Bunk) blocking ONE LEFT left lane blocking road and footpath but Towing crew did not even care after many requests. I sent phot to 2 DCP and Traffic SI but was of no use. It was in Bejai ward of Mr. Lancy Pinto and He even did not care. Citizens and with little Children were walking on middle of road and my photos showed them to DCPs. Did they remove? No those tanks were there for two months or more. There are 20 t0 25 Bikes are Parked everyday near Baithurly Junction on footpath and people stand on road waiting for Buses and walk on road. Sent Photo to 2 DCPs and South Traffic requesting to remove them since a year. Let theer be major accident and Local Corporator Mr. Basker Moily will attend the Funeral with speech of Sympathy along with Local MLA. Law in Mangalore is for who you are and what connection there is to Politicians.

Stop the vehicle and ask driver to tie collection bag. or call moral police then only these stupid drivers will understand. These need to be monitor by traffic police instead putting petty case for helmet and RC books. RTO inspector passing the vehicles without any safety measures and give fitness certificate, Traffic police taking bribe, civil police take bribe from small road side venders so there is no time to check this unsafety, we are posting from some where else so better do the moral police for public safety. Health and safety is our number one priority, make sure it is your number one priority too,

These trucks must be made to stop at potholes and fill with concrete that is going to be spilled ahead.

In Dubai these trucks are forced to make their outlet trays point upwards so that they do not spill on the road.

Ponkra mangalore, because we live in a third world country ,it should not also continue in future too.It must come out of this image and should learn to do things from basic complete and clean. At home too we dont leave things half done.when we do things clean and complete ,then our market share too increases.Otherwise as you say ,we dont get any contract. In Princip ,these concret mixer should stay at work and transfer the mixed cement with trollys then and there. Not like in India go with cement all the way to work place and spill it all through road. Why doesnt contractor or who is responsible notice this?Inform Police about this so that no road will be spilled with cement unnecessarily.

What about these ready using public space like footpath and etc. for construction purpose? We have a case in St. Mother Teresa road Falnir. Pedestrians and and other users of the road are troubled by their activities. Police and concerned authorities should take action. Not just be silent on lookers of the inconvenience caused to the general public.
