Mangaluru, Apr 8: In a sublime gesture of humanitarian concern, the entire fire brigade came calling after learning that a baby pigeon was facing peril to its life.
A large water body has been formed in a private land where construction work is going on opposite Dr T M A Pai convention hall on M G Road here. A baby pigeon which approached the standing water to drink, hit iron railings and fell into the water. It was trying its best to save itself from the water but it could not come out. H Shashidhar Shetty, general secretary of National Environment Care Foundation, observed this from a neighbouring building.
As he realised that going into the compound and rescuing the pigeon that was struggling in standing water that was quite deep was almost impossible, he called the fire brigade. The staff of the fire and emergency services staff from Pandeshwar reached the spot along with rescue vehicle and saved the pigeon. Thereafter, animal lover, Tausif, was called to the spot. He dried out the water from the pigeon's body with a cloth, pumped air on the bird from the silencer of the scooter to dry it, and then treated it.
Shashidhar Shetty said that the pigeon has survived this ordeal and that it will be allowed to fly away after keeping it under observation for a day. He thanked the fire brigade on behalf of the citizens for responding to the call immediately and saving the life of the pigeon.
