Mangaluru: NGOs demand police to curb 'politically motivated' vigilantism

Mangaluru, Apr 6 (IANS): Condemning growing incidents of moral policing, two prominent NGOs -- Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development and the Karwane-e-Mohabbat Team -- have submitted a memorandum to Mangaluru city police commissioner N Shashi Kumar to take strict action against politically and communally motivated vigilantism in the district.

Vidya Dinker and Shabeer Ahamed submitted the memorandum on Monday.

This memorandum was submitted in the wake of a 23-year-old Muslim man, who was travelling with a woman from another religion on a bus, was allegedly stabbed by members of the Bajrang Dal on April 1. This is the fourth such case of moral policing since March 2021.

According to the memorandum, vigilantism in the name of preventing 'Love Jihad' and cattle trafficking, innocent citizens were being targeted by the enforcer-goons belonging to politically motivated strong-arm outfits.

"What we see is a worrying daily replay of provocative statements, public shaming, incessant harassment, brutal violence, and infringement of legitimate rights of citizens. Such incidents are reported in the media, shared on social media, lead to tense situations and bring back the climate of fear that had our region in its grip in the not so distant past," the memorandum said.

It also added that both the state government and the police department have acknowledged the fact that the district was communally sensitive and that it had been reeling under the negative impact of communalism for decades.

"There is a long history of brutal vigilantism and (im)moral policing in this region, particularly targeted at the minority communities and those who don't conform to the purported code of conduct imagined by anti-social outfits," the memorandum said.

"We now earnestly urge all the institutions of governance like the District Administration and the Police Department to take serious note of this current resurgence and come up with an immediate and effective response to curb the anti-social forces, establish rule of law and restore the civil rights of the people," the memorandum appealed.

The memorandum further added that any delay and negligence on the part of the administration will only result in matters getting out of hand yet again.

"We hope you realize the gravity of the situation and immediately take positive steps to implement the Court's detailed directions in a sincere manner. We also seek that immediate steps be taken for identification of the groups orchestrating this lawlessness and those involved in perpetrating these incidents of (im)moral and/or communal policing, vigilantism, violence and communal hate crimes, including hate speech," the memorandum concluded.

After 2014, everybody knows that 'Politically motivated" vigilantism is going on. Even police officers (Many not few) are also supporting such development. Many Hindu organizations are fighting for providing shelter for abandoned cows "so called mothers" but nobody to help a real mother who is in dire circumstances to take care of her.

Are these moral police are paid by government? Moral policy means they may be well trained and well disciplined to complete the job around wherever required. If they moral police are doing most of the job then what our uniform police will do to perform and discharge their daily work? When I was in Mangalore 25 years ago we had only regular uniform wearing police and only few but by then nobody will attack worship places or attack on anyone rather it was a most beautiful and peaceful place to live in the world. Who supports these so called moral police and who funds them? Time to come together and clean this shit out once and for all. People need to live in peace same time this so called love jihad if existed should be stopped. Love jihad is also dangerous just to use honest girls for certain purposes.

The deafening Silence of the PM, Amit Shah and indeed the leaders of the BJP/RSS to all the mob Lynchings, Love Jihad incidents, attacks on Minorities, Cow Politics,Atrocities on women and Communal incidents of the past six years and now with the Rail Minister in denial mode about the shameful attack on the Nuns by the fringe groups of the BJP at Jhansi Rail station gives encouragement and Impunity for these groups to continue their assaults, Harassment, Intimidation with no fear of consequences and utter disregard for the rule of law.

Please deploy moral police to chhattisgarh and Jammu Kashmir. So that they can't trouble God fear persons with small population. Meantime population should be control instead of having 10 to 12 kids just have 1 or 2 and give them good basic education, Or else they will travel day and night .

Religious intolerance and hatred speeches are the main cause. Irrespective political affiliations, political leaders need basic education of religious tolerance.

Police everywhere use free assistants called informants. If the local 'vigilantes' also volunteer as police informants, there is virtually no chance the police will act against them. That is how the Gestapo was able to work effectively during Hitler's days.

People worship some politicians as Gods own messengers !! This is what happened in Middle east. In the name of religion tyrants controlled the masses and imploded at the end.

Do you think they know swimming? Are they brave enough to save someone's life? They are good at violence and communal disturbance only. If they are hardworking and earning their daily bread....they were not (im)moral police!

Moral police in DK cannot do anything individually, work only in groups and support of some God Father. Catch them as life guards in a beach.
