Panaji: GMCH conducts second organ harvesting procedure from brain dead woman

Panaji, Mar 31: The Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here, retrieved and transplanted organs from a brain dead 62-year-old woman on Tuesday.

State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Wednesday said that the harvesting and transplant of the organs took place on Tuesday under the 'deceased donor transplant programme of State Organ Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) Goa'.

Rane said that this was the second-ever organ harvesting procedure conducted at Goa Medical College and Hospital in its history.

He said that both the kidneys, which were harvested, were transplanted to the eligible patients under the Kidney Transplant Programme of SOTTO Goa and the liver was allocated to IKDRC Hospital, Ahmadabad, (Gujarat).

Informing about the achievement of GMCH on Tuesday, Rane tweeted “@GoaGmc in its continued efforts to save lives conducted yet another successful case of organ retrieval and transplant from a brain dead donor under the Deceased Donor Transplant Programme of SOTTO Goa.”

“A 62-year-old woman admitted for subarachnoid haemorrhage, after a clinical diagnosis, was declared brain dead. Her family stepped forward and requested for organ donation of the deceased. Their gesture saved three precious lives,” he said in another tweet.
