Mangaluru, Mar 30: Dakshina Kannada district had become notorious for the increase of coronavirus infections and related deaths last year. However, it now transpires that only 17 had died in the district exclusively on account of coronavirus infection.
During the year after corona entered the district, the total number of deaths stands at 742. A team of doctors have conducted death audit and analysed the result. Covid-related deaths have also been segregated. As per the details, 17 deaths occurred due to coronavirus, 188 were coincidental deaths, 533 associated deaths, two were non-covid deaths, one post covid death and one home isolation death.
Coincidental deaths are those in which people suffering from coronavirus die because of other causes. For example, they would have died due to an accident. Associated relates to comorbidities or people already having other health complications like diabetes, heart ailments, high blood pressure etc.
Out of 742 deaths, 520 were men and the balance 222 were women. As is observed universally, here too, death rate is high among those aged over 40.
One person who had recovered after covid treatment had died when being taken to hospital after he suffered heart attack. This is considered as home isolation death.
This year, the cases have been minimal. In January, three deaths occurred, one in Febrary and two in March till now due to coronavirus infection.
In Udupli district, out of 190 corona-related deaths, four had died purely on account of coronavirus. Out of the deaths, 139 were men and 51 women.
