Gadag, Mar 29: Most of the children are not comfortable with the idea of attending school because of the disinterestedness of teachers to make the classes interesting, lack of proper facilities etc. But the children of a government school here have outsmarted private school students. Children from the slum, who are students of this school, have surprised people.
The students of Sri Rama Nagara government higher primary school in Gadag. Students of the government school, Saroja Dokkannavar and Laxmi Vinbhuti have made the boat with waste plastic water bottles. There is an interesting story behind how the idea struck them.
Saroja, a sixth standard student, had seen empty bottles floating in Bheeshma pond. She told the science teacher, that these bottles can be better used if boats are made from them. The teacher too studied the prospects and told the students. Under the guidance of the teachers, the students put together 195 empty water bottles with a capacity of one litre each. By using bamboo slits, they made a boat that is three feet wide and three feet long. This boat takes a load of about 90 kg. The children successfully experimented with this boat in the district stadium's swimming pool.
The students feel that if the people keep such low cost boats with them, when rivers like Malaprabha, Tungabhadra and Bennehalla in the district experience flash floods, these low cost boats can save their lives.
