Mangaluru: Gold worth nearly Rs 40 lac seized at airport, couple arrested

Mangaluru, Mar 28: The officers of Mangaluru air customs on Saturday March 27 evening thwarted yet another attempt to smuggle gold via Mangaluru International Airport. A lady and her husband have been arrested.

The team of customs officers at the airport intercepted a lady passenger named Fousiya Missiriya Moideen Kunhi (33), who was travelling along with her husband Moideen Kunhi Cheroor (44) and four children, residents of Cheroor, Kasargod, Kerala.


The couple along with their children disembarked the Air India flight coming from Dubai, from where the lady passenger in connivance with her spouse tried to smuggle gold by concealing it in her specially designed inner garment.

Gold of net weight 851 grams valued at Rs 39.48 lac was seized from the couple. Both Fousiya and Moideen were arrested.

Further investigation is under progress.

The operation was led by Avinash Kiran Rongali, IRS deputy commissioner. Crucial role of surveillance and interception was executed by Manokatyayani along with Shrikanth and Nagesh, all superintendent rank officers.

    No matter how you conceal it, airport scanners / x-rays are designed in such a way that they penetrate deep & alert it as metallic item inside human body, even if you swallow it ( like mexican drug mules who smuggle across US border) the scanner immediately alerts the officer.

    Readers there are 34 International airports in our nation.. Really wonder how many of these are under the radar of smugglers ??? MIA has gained widespread notoriety for being a hub for smuggling syndicates, this is due to it's location, which is close to the turbulent region of North Kerala !!!!
