Mangaluru, Mar 20: Department of Community Medicine of Father Muller Medical College (FMMC) on Saturday March 20 organized a guest lecture on nutritional problems in the elderly at the hospital conference hall.
Professor and head of the department of geriatric medicine at Yenepoya Medical College, Dr Prabha Adhikari delivered a lecture of nutritional problems in the elderly.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Prabha Adhikari said, "We need to be careful in our middle age on our diet and consume a healthy diet. There are certain nutritional issues in the elderly spectrum such as under nutrition due to reduced food intake, over nutrition due to excess food, selective nutrient of deficiency like vitamin D, B12, iron deficiency.
"Nonphysiological factors like decrease in the intake of food during covid, lack of taste and smell, oral ulcers, depression, difficulties in swallowing are possible. At the age of 80s and 90s prevalence sharply rises and 100% nutritional-related issues."
The HOD of Community Medicine of Father Muller, Dr Sourabh Kumar, Professor of community medicine of Father Muller Dr Narayana V, associate professor of geriatric medicine of Yenepoya College Dr Abhijith Rao and associate professor of community medicine of Yenepoya College Dr Pracheth were present.
