Mangaluru, Mar 19: Rajya Sabha member Suresh Prabhu, has requested union minister for civil aviation Hardeep Singh Puri, urging him to name an airport after an excellent parliamentarian, the late George Fernandes.

In his letter addressed to the minister, Prabhu said that George was a native of Mangaluru, who went on to become the union defence minister. He recalled that Fernandes had energetically fought against the evils of emergency and had become minister a number of times, and who has become a household name in this country because of several of his excellent schemes backed by his foresight and vision. He recalled that the late Fernandes had organized the railway strike to address grievances of the railway employees and that he had contributed as an editor for various publications in Konkani, Kannada, Hindi and English. Therefore, Suresh Prabhu has said that it would be a great honour for him if the airport can be named after him.

George, a labour leader, human rights activist, journalist, socialist, politician and ever active personality, had passed away on January 29, 2019.
