Mangaluru, Mar 17: The city is getting a new look and new facilities. Along with this, it is planned to keep the water of Gujjarakere pond purified with the oxidation pond system. This will be the first time that such a system is being used in the city for the purification of a pond.

Under the Smart City Project, the city is being beautified and amenities are being improved. As part of the process, Gujjarakere pond is being given a new look. Since the two months, Smart City works have been stalled, creating problems. Within months, the rainy season will begin, and before that, important works have to be executed here. Purification of water is very much necessary so that water can be stored in this water body during the rainy season.

The pond is full of water now. As it is difficult to elaborate the water to collect fresh water, it has been planned to use an oxidation pond which can purify water and pump it back into the pond.

Gujjarakere is being completely getting a facelift at a cost of about four crore rupees. Work of dredging at a cost of Rs 15 lac is going on. Providing steel railing around the compound, footpath, jogging track, cycling track, storm water drain, table, seats, electric lights, toilet block and other facilities are yet to be provided.

General secretary of Gujjarakere Theertha Samrakshana Vedujke, Nemu Kottary, says that the local administrator should take steps to ensure that effluents are not released into this pond. He said that with the interest evinced by the MLA, this work has begun. He stressed that it is necessary to conserve Gujjarakere to ensure that the city does not face water shortage in future.
