Mangaluru, Mar 17: The Urban Property Ownership Record (UPOR) that has been issued at Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) limits from the last two to three years, is in a mess. Even though the property card is not mandatory at present, the citizens who try their hands at getting one, are suffering.
In the year 2019, the government had issued its order twice, making it mandatory to get property cards for urban properties. As there were teething troubles and problems with the issuance of the cards, and property registrations encountered problems, the people opposed the same and the government relented.
Out of 1.59 lac properties in the city, 67,000 draft cards are ready and about 50,000 final cards are ready. But the office has many problems like shortage of staff, corruption, middlemen menace, etc.
Assistant director in the department of survey, Niranjan K, says that draft cards are ready in case of 50 percent of properties. Final cards have to be collected after making fee payment. As such, people collect their cards with delay, he stated. He also mentioned that 30 percent properties are located in the city outskirts.
