Mangaluru, Mar 15: Considering integrated performance in properly utilizing various grants of the central government and successfully experimenting with the rural employment guarantee scheme, Dakshina Kannada (DK) zilla panchayat (ZP), which also takes credit for making the district open defecation free, has won national-level recognition now.
On the occasion of the 75th year of Indian independence, 75 zilla panchayats from the country backed by good performance have been chosen for this recognition. The three zilla panchayats to have been picked for the honour happen to be Davanagere, Kodagu and Mandya.
In addition to doing well in other parameters, Dakshina Kannada has achieved integrated development. It also has got a good ranking in cleanliness and judicious use of grants. It also has been recognised in the field of health and education. It is also at the forefront of the construction of solid waste and effluents. It has successfully made use of finance commission grants and the National Rural Livelihood Mission.
