Mangaluru, Mar 13: In order to strike coordination between the general public and the city corporation, the civic body here has planned to allot QR codes to all the shops and houses within the city limits. The system is particularly helpful in keeping track of the waste collection work.

The new system is being implemented under the Smart City Project to keep track of garbage collection from houses, apartments, and commercial complexes. As of now, QR codes have already been fixed for about 20,000 buildings and the remaining 80,000 are yet to be provided with these codes. The system is planned to be made fully operational within a few days.

The people of some wards have been complaining that the garbage trucks do not visit them every day. The above technology comes in handy for scrutinizing the genuineness of the complaints and to respond to complaints without delay.

On an experimental basis, QR codes had been provided to buildings in a few wards. This system has been working successfully. Therefore the corporation has planned to extend this system to the entire city.

About QR codes: QR codes are made on the lines of the codes used for online payment systems. These codes will be pasted to garbage production centres like houses, hotels, apartment complexes, commercial complexes and compounds of industries. The civic workers are given machines to scan the QR codes. They scan and collect garbage. The information reaches the Integrated Command Control Centre set up under the Smart City Project. The staff at the centre keep track of this information. If QR code of any of the buildings is not scanned, it is treated that garbage from there has not been collected, and the officers get this information.

City mayor Premananda Shetty, said that the work of providing QR codes to all the buildings in the city is progressing.

What you say is correct. Scan of QR code is no proof that garbage has been collected.Probably this is a scam and the agency for providing the QRcode has made a fast buck along with someone in the smart city project .
