US Secretary of State to look into case of Fr Stan Swamy held in India

New York, Mar 12 (IANS): US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that he would look into the case of an 83-year-old Catholic priest, Fr Stan Swamy, held in India on allegations he was linked to Maoists.

Responding on Wednesday to a request from a member of the House of Representatives while he was testifying before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Blinken asked for more information and said: "We'll look into it."

Juan Vargas, who is the vice chair of the House International Economic Policy and Migration Subcommittee, told Blinken while questioning him that it was "incredible injustice" that Swamy, who was arrested by the National Investigation Agency, has been in jail for over 130 days.

Swamy belongs to the Jesuit order of priests and Vargas said that he had himself been a member of that society.

He was arrested in Ranchi and taken to Maharashtra and detained in a Pune jail under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) on allegations that he participated in the activities of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist.

The case relates to a celebration by Dalits on January 1, 2018, in Koregaon-Bhima near Pune, which was followed by violence that left one person dead.

Swamy has been an activist for tribal and Dalit rights.

Earlier in his testimony to the Committee on President Joe Biden's Priorities for US Foreign Policy, Blinken said that in furtherance of its aims, "we held the first ministerial meeting of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue between us, Japan, Australia, and India, and we will hold a leader-level summit this week on Friday".

China was the dominant theme during the hearing with Blinken declaring, "Our relationship with China, the biggest geopolitical test of the 21st century".

Repeatedly questioned about Biden's comment when asked on a CNN programme about Beijing treatment of the Uighur Muslim minority that "culturally, there are different norms that each country and their leaders are expected to follow", Blinken reiterated that he considers there was a "genocide" of the Uighurs and the US would continue to speak out forcefully against it.

USA decision to look into Fr Stan Swamy's case should be viewed as a Human Rights issue and not interference in the affairs of another country or in a matter that is sub judice. There are Indians holding very high positions in the government of foreign countries as well as elected to Parliament. They do have a soft corner for their motherland and concern for deviation in human rights. Let us not forget that India took the lead to show the world how important it is to be "Non-Aligned" by starting a Non-Aligned Movement; gave the world the PanchSheel; etc.

People seem to be so happy by this news. But what will happen actually? He has to know the procedures for asking about a incident in another country. Does that country have a fair independent judiciary? if so, this news is just that. News meant to only catch some interest and nothing more. Wait and see. Time will tell anyways.

As far as US government interference please note it was our great man who went to US to campaign for a useless person and US people kicked him out. Was that not interference.

A big shame on our judiciary system. Present judiciary is only for the upper caste and corrupt politicians. An elderly person who is fighting for the rights of downtrodden and the tribals Dalits irrespective of caste... And he doesn't have any wealth or family or accumulation of wealth. A simple elderly knowledgeable upright person who dedicated his life for the poor is now held for no reason saying he is maoist. We pray that the judiciary understand the severity of his personal health and the social work he had been doing for the poorest.

If Fr. Stan Swamy has done wrong, there should be a speedy trial in the court of law and sentenced. But by the government holding him in very difficult conditions, and by the way the authorities are going Fr. Stan will never, ever be set free. For example Fr. Stan has a condition that he could not drink water directly from a cup and so he requested for a straw to drink water. For the government even to give him a straw to drink water was initially turned down condition, whereas at the same time the 5 bench Supreme court judges took time off on the weekend and had a special sitting to make bail arrangements for the release of Arnab Gosawmi when he was named directly as abetting a case of suicide. Many peace loving people and organizations have repeatedly asked for better living conditions and basic human right for the ailing priest but the government is not co-operating. Hence, with deepest regret as Fr. Stan is not getting any of the above this matter had to go to a third party.

What is the need to SEND ?? Those who desire to leave, do so at their wish/will and the government comes to know after they reach their destination. I.e. Mallya, Choksey, NiMo, Nityanand, so on. This Oldman was working with the poor and if the government found fault with that, he should have been given prison facilities like any other prisoner and with consideration of his health conditions. If he had desired to live in the US, he would have opted for it and the order of which he is a member, would have facilitated it. Truth is that he opted to be with the poor tribals.

What are Yoga Saints doing in the US ? Can you explain ? In Hindu scripture, going beyond seven seas is impurity, India is a holy land where spirituality is to be practiced/preached. What work do the saints you mentioned have to do in the US ? Secondly, how much funds such saints collect and send to India, do have any idea ? For what ? To fund organizations associated with Pragnya Singh (I mean, her past of-course) ? Why is Modi govt prohibiting only Christian and Muslim organization getting funds ? Are non-Christian, Non-Muslim organizations saints (that I have quoted Pragnya Singh) ? How many centers the other holy holy holy saint Baba Ramdev owns around the world ? Do you have any idea about how much fortune he possesses ? Why is he still called a Sadhu ? Common man, write some sensible comment, don't just keep shooting off behaving like a cat !

I defy you BJP supporters, show me one news where you guys advised Modi against taking Indian political issues international. Then it was NaMo or Howdy, then now it's US' interference. Take it lying down. Meanwhile, I wish that the US takes up Chris Michael matter too. Modi government must explain why the man hasn't faced a trial though he is jailed since more than 3 years. Why are Indians fooled by putting blame on one family (Michael to have paid them the kickbacks and Modi didn't find in 7 years the cave where the money is hidded) hence the ruling party gains politically.
