Mangaluru: Footpaths in city waiting to inflict fractures, claim lives

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Mar 9: Mangaluru is one among the leading ‘Smart Cities’ in the country. However, the footpaths in the city, which exist in only at a few places, are not fit and comfortable for the pedestrians. In certain places, they are in such a bad shape that they can cost you your life if you are not careful enough.

One such footpath is located on the road near Infosys building at Kottara towards Kulur. This footpath which is steep, is so narrow that it is difficult for even one person to walk along.

During the rainy season rainwater gets collected on the main road here. Because of the fear of losing lives, the pedestrians find it impossible to cross this road in standing water, says retired bank officer P Raghunath Kamath. The locals say that the problem is created because of the hesitation of the city corporation to acquire additional land needed for building a comfortable footpath. The road is such that if the vehicle moving on the road swerves a little to the side, the pedestrian is forced to jump down the deep gorge next to the road.

In many roads, no proper provision has been made for the pedestrians. In certain roads, for a person to easily move forward, he should at least use a bicycle. Because, there is no space for the pedestrians to walk or cross the road.

Even though there has been some improvement on the footpath facility in the heart of the city, they are not people-friendly. The footpath from Navbharat Circle to PVS Circle and again from there to TMA Pai International Convention Centre, and from Father Muller to Falnir, are quite dangerous. Many of these spaces are occupied by stalls and vegetable vendors. The road between Dr B R Ambedkar Circle to Bunts Hostel which is steep also does not have a proper footpath.

City mayor Premananda Shetty, noted that in some places, footpath contacts in the centre of the city has been severed. He said that steps would be taken to lay footpath wherever space is available. He stated that the option of availing land for footpath through TDR system will also be explored. He said that when both these things are not possible, the option of building railing to ensure safety of pedestrians will be examined.

It does not matter which political party is in power. Unfortunately the citizens get a bad deal and have to suffer. I suppose citizens forums and NGO's will have to chip in to make peoples life safe. As they say "self help is best help".

There is no footpath near Blondel church and school. The people especially the senior citizens have to walk on the road thereby endangering their lives as the vehicles move at top speed of 80 to 100 kms and at that speed there is hardly time to apply brakes. The children also have to walk on the road which also endangers their lives. Therefore request the Mayor/MC commissioner/appropriate authorities to take immediate steps to construct a foot path on the road leading to St Lawrence church and school. This may safe many peoples lives. Also traffic police needs to control the speed especially of bikes/taxis buses etc.

Just look at this...look at that ... this is the problem ... this ...this ...this. Err .. Solution? The actions or rather "in-actions" of the past are the manifestations of the present .... so can't we all take firm steps for the future ? The amount of resistance to take action and SACRIFICE our personal comforts in the present is incredible. "We" succeed ALWAYS in the future ... sometimes that future is one or two and sometime three generations away! It requires a SUSTAINED and DILLIGENT approach. THAT IS WHAT WE ARE NOT DOING!

Most dangerous city to live for citizens. I have contacted corporators,Engineers and including previous city commissioner and wasted my time and Petrol along wearing out Tyres going to MCC,Vidahana Soudha and DC Office too. But it is like pouring water on Boulder where nothing grows. I was joking recently with a Life Insurance Official with bussiness suggestion. Install Banner with following words : IF YOU ARE WALKING ON STREETS OR FOOTPATHS OF MANGALORE CITY-KINDLY BUY A LIFE INSURANCE POLICY TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY IN CASE YOU FALL AND DIE INSIDE OPENINGS ON FOOTPATHS AND STREETS. Every foot path ends up into 3 ft' deep gutter to kill the Padestrian. Look one close to City Drug House and City Hospital under Kadri Ward. Shown to Engineers, past Corporator and present corporator but nothin since last 2 years. Special interest NGO declare Mangalore as Safe City to live after Dinner at Ocean Pearl, along with MCC officials. They do not go around city to check how safe it is.

We are left in the hands of rogues ruling us Why does the government expect taxes from the citizens . All our tax money is routed for their foreign tours illicit affairs hoarding properties. Not a single road is constructed decently in the city , every where offsets and half done work Government rogue government don’t demand taxes if basic amenities are not provided Any accident takes place due to the negligence of toad construction the whole bill will be settled by the engineers and contractors

Footpaths in Mangalore are pathetic. Most of the carriageway do not have a footpath. Some footpaths are narrow, occupied by vendors, vehicles do find place on the footpath, even when the traffic police notice the vehicles parked on the footpath they do not do anything ( mostly commercial places). Mother Teresa road, Falnir the footpath which was there as disappeared. There is no place for pedestrians.

Mangalore is filled with vehicles. Day by day increasing. Parking is a big issue. There is no place for pedestrians. Last decade development completely changed the structure of the road and footpath by installing concrete footpaths. Now, these footpaths are neither strong nor durable. Victims are the common people. This phenomenon is throughout the city. Future developers of the city should plan in such a way there is no damage takes place. Hope for the best.
