Udupi, Mar 5: Deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha has urged people to be careful while using technology in everyday life. He was speaking after inaugurating a day-long workshop on cybersecurity and e-management held by the E-Management Centre, Bengaluru at V S Acharya auditorium, Manipal on Friday, March 5.

"It is necessary to stay vigil while using technology in our everyday life," the DC said.

"The use of the internet is increasing day by day. Miscreants sitting in one corner of the country are skimming innocent people. They are resorting to the hacking of email IDs and misusing the web. Therefore, having knowledge of cybersecurity is vital to prevent such incidents,” he said.

“We should be aware of the way we use technology. There could even be a virus that is injected by the hackers to steal/wipe our data,” he said. “Cybersecurity centres are opened at the district level to prevent cybercriminals. Those are likely to be opened at taluk levels in the future. Anti-virus software should be installed without fail in the computers that are used in offices,” Jagadeesha added.

Alwyn Roshan Pais, assistant professor of the computer science and engineering department at NITK College said, "The number of people losing money is increasing as there is an increase in digital transactions. People are devastated when they are defrauded as the possibilities of recovering money in these instances are few."

“We should pay attention to safety measures while using websites. It is necessary to often change passwords of WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram,” he said.

Additional deputy commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu, Mangaluru district training centre professor, Venkatesh G and others were present.
