Mangaluru, Mar 5: Seven students were arrested in two separate cases of ragging in the city, informed police commissioner N Shashi Kumar.
Addressing media here on Friday, March 5, he said, “Four students were arrested for ragging junior students at private college in Mukka. The arrested are K U Shameel (22) from Mukka, Mohammed Bazil (22) from Baikampady, Sambhram Alva (20) from Mulky and Ashwith N Johnson (21) from Kalpane. All are engineering students of different streams.
“The accused had threatened, abused and behaved in an inhumanly manner with the junior students. On February 26, the issue was taken up in the anti-ragging committee of the college and the accused were proved guilty. Thereafter, accused Shameel, Bazil and Sambhram threatened and assaulted a lecturer after an argument. On March 3, the college dean filed a police complaint regarding four senior students ragging first-year students,” he said.
In another case, three students were arrested in connection to an incident of ragging under Kankanady station limits.
The arrested are Mohammed Adil (20) and Mohammed Nizammudin (20) from Kannur, and Mohammed Riyaz (20) from Calicut.
It is said that nine junior students who were staying in a rented room at Pumpwell Simon Lane, were ragged by the three senior students. The seniors who were staying in the hostel, visited the rented room of the junior students and repeatedly ragged them and threatened them to shave their heads.
Shashi Kumar demanded the concerned authorities of educational institutions to take due measures against ragging.
