Mangaluru: Marriage of vegans - Sans products derived from animals

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Mar 5: Madhura and Damodar are vegans. They therefore followed the vegan system to the hilt at their marriage to show how committed they are to vegetarianism.

Madhura Shenoy Hegde from Mangaluru has been practising vegan style of living from the last two years. Damodar Hegde from Kollam, Kerala, has been following vegan food habits since the last six months. When their engagement took place, they decided together to follow the vegan food system even at their wedding ceremony.

They were aware that they would have to make changes in how they dress, what they consume and serve etc. Both the families supported their plans. Vegans do not use any product that causes sufferings to animals. Therefore, Madhura used saris made of cotton, linen and banana fibre till the reception ceremony. The couple belong to the GSB community where use of corals for Mangalasutra is mandatory. But here, the groom tied white thread dipped in turmeric to the neck of the bride instead of gold and coral-studded Mangalasutra.

The marriage was held near Avarsa, Ankola, in Uttara Kannada district on February 21. Reception was organized here on February 22. All items of food including breakfast were made without using milk and milk products. A well-known catering service here prepared purely vegan dishes and a popular ice cream company made ice cream from tender coconuts to avoid milk. Even for the 'Kanyadana' ritual, tender coconut water was used instead of milk.

The marriage ceremony organised in a simple way came in for appreciation of the people. It may be mentioned here that people following vegan lifestyle totally give up use of things which are associated with animal violence, cruelty, atrocity etc. Milk, milk products, honey, silk, animal pelts, hair, wool etc are not used by the vegans.

@ rolf, Dubai, Boiled or fried egg is vegetarian as you cannot hatch. Raw egg is vegetarian as you can hatch them to produce chicks.

Congratulations to the Vegan couple. I hope you can continue to practice this in all respects. Don't forget there are lot of medications which is based on active bacteria or from bi-products of animal organs, which includes capsules etc. Wondering which hospital will be able to treat you if you fall sick?

And why are you bothered about it? They are just married. Wish them luck. If you have nothing good to say, you don't have to say anything at all. They are following the ideals they chose after putting in some thought. Have they asked you to be Vegan? Why is your bum on fire? Mind your business.

Many people think that being vegetarian and consuming milk is okay but for the sake of dairy, the poor animals are tortured in some of the worst conditions. Vegans understand this and hence do not even drink milk.

Vegan or non vegan it doesn't matter. We should put full ston marriage ceremonies. Because of the marriage ceremonies lot of family destroyed. Millions of poor girls pushed themselves to prostitution because of unnecessary ceremonies. For marriage important is consent of couples and respective families nothing else rest is private affair. The money investing on ceremonies spend of education and medical treatments of needy.

Great job! I do not understand why people have to eat meat or other animal-based food. Vegan food is better for one's health and great for saving this planet.

If the practice of this type of 'vegan' is to be believed, what about the 'gau maatha' feelings and the milk business associated with it ? Are all those who rear cows for milking, going against the cruelty-less rule ? They don't eat animal-meat yet, they do use the milk ? What are they, vegans, or non-vegans ?

Mangalorean Mangalore.there is nothing like you have to serve food so or so.Many want to make their celebration better than others, more choices ,more gold etc.a Type of bet between caterers, and marraige conductor s.Simply a show.more vareities of meat , drinks ,more show at stage .simply nonsense.Later that will be paid by either by loan or sell your property. No wonder many Hindus dont like when a girl is born.Never ending amount of dowry, gold, and gifts to bridegroom.after marriage too their needs never go to end.Boys want a well educated girl!Atleast by catholics this is come down .This should be changed .Present bride and grooms realize this .Important is their life later. How many boys leave their wives after marriage because of lack of dowry.make children and wives life miserable.
