Mangaluru, Mar 2: Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee staged a protest, protesting against the increase in the price of fuel and other essential commodities, in front of the deputy commissioner's office here on Tuesday March 2.

The protestors carried out a rally from the clock tower to the DC’s office along with a bullock cart. A few Congress workers carried firewood and LPG gas cylinders.

Addressing the protestors, former minister B Ramanath Rai said, "If a ruler becomes a businessman, then his subjects will become beggars. Narendra Modi-led union government in the centre is an undeclared autocratic government in the country."

“When the UPA government led by Congress was in power, the excise duty for petrol was Rs 9 and Rs 3 for diesel. But, the BJP government in the centre has made excise duty Rs 33 for petrol and Rs 32 for diesel.

"It is the Congress which introduced pro-people policies and Land Reform Acts and reservation for the weaker sections of the society. The BJP leaders have no concern for the poor. Instead, it protects the interests of corporates. They will never protect the interests of the poor. They will speak about the poor only to gain votes.

“The BJP government came to power assuring the people of bringing back black money but though it is seven years after coming to power, it has failed to bring the same,” he said.

He also urged the public to elect Congress to power, which will reduce the price of fuel and other commodities. “You can fool all the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time," Rai said.

Former minister and MLA U T Khader said, "People should come forward against anti-people policies of the BJP-led governments. The BJP government is here to sell India and increase the burden of tax on public. The Congress government had nationalised the banks, but the BJP government is making all efforts to privatise the same.”

Taking a dig at the BJP government the state, Khader said, “The BJP government in the state is acting as the agent of the central government.

"The fishermen are in distress as the government failed to release the subsidy amount which they rightfully deserve.

"If the government provides reservation for people belonging to upper class, it is betraying the other backward classes in the district. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel had staged protests when the UPA was in power over price hikes. Why he is silent now on the rising prices of fuel?” Khader questioned.

District Congress president Harish Kumar said, "The union government’s policies are putting common peole into trouble. Narendra Modi's government is favouring only the corporates like Ambani and Adani."

He also said that the Prime Minister is not ready to address the media, instead, keeps speaking in ‘Mann ki Baat’ programme.

KPCC spokesperson Sudhir Kumar Murolli also spoke at the protest.

Former MLAs J R Lobo, Mohiuddin Bava, Shakunthala Shetty and others were present.

All commodity stocks (including oil) sold on Wall Street (New York) are getting valuable and have rendered oil expensive. However, if Govt wants to control inflation, they better let go of their greed and allow downward revision of tax. Oil and alcohol is most taxed commodity in India. Now can we speak how DK managed to put together 2000 Cr (and still counting) for Ayodhya temple construction when they feel the pinch from rising petrol prices? Does it not show that if approached properly, there is money in the society that can be used for the proper utilization even at the expense of buying expensive petrol or subsidizing agriculture produce by support other than that provided by the Government?

India certainly requires a strong, viable, constructive opposition party... The INC being the oldest political party, has a huge responsibility to bounce back from the periphery of self destruction !!! They must Re- Modify, Re - energize and finally Re- launch, itself to challenge the Nationalist BJP... They should boot out all remenats of Dynastic Raj, infuse talented, young blood and then relaunch the age old party.....

Excise tax is shared proportionally by the Center and the state...They should both cut their tax by atleast Rs 10 /- per litre.. This will drastically reduce the burden on the common citizen and help in bringing down inflation in our nation....

Sometime being educated needs bit of sensibility beyond party affiliations. I was once BJP this is during Vajpayee era, that's is over these one must not become member of ant party nor one must register with BJP or Congress or any party. We public must remain neutral and vote only based on performance, nothing else. Throw away these politicians/parties if they bring dharma/Religion/Ram temple/ or any place of worship...…..all this nautanki is only to make common man both educated and uneducated ullu. Present govt in centre came to power brainwashing majority of Hindus and we all voted for them thinking they protect our dharma. Are they doing it? Can they protect hindusim by bringing in Hindutva??? Only stupidity and nothing else, so now wake up and measure them on what they delivered- Petrol/diesil prices have sky rocketed, other essential commodities cannot be bought by common man. Country is sold to adanis/Ambanis……..and our formers who is our annadata is on road and yet we have these idiots justifying central govt.....this is the height of stupidity.

Dr. Kamath...my wishes to you. Increment in day to day food items or say fuel may be will not affect who are working as professionals..say for ex. Doctors like you. There's no scarcity of patients. Sickness is 24 × 7...and all 365 days. When a person unable to travel by bus, how about purchasing groceries and buying cylinder at this rate? Every house has been provided cylinders by government. Now, who will pay for the cylinder? Now, we cant go back to woodden option to cook...If go to hospital, doctors fee, medicinal charges are not less...like wise every thing...milk, electric bill, water bill, property tax etc etc...limitless. One of our friends here in this forum said, with the increase of diesel, bus fares, auto fares will be shoot up immediately but, they wont decrease the fares, with the decrease of the fuel prices...

Even people who voted for the BJP can join these protests it is because of the rise in prices and to save our families and self from the rising prices. The rise in prices will ruin the peace in the nation, this will be a litmus test for the BJP in the upcoming elections.
