50% of Karnataka govt vehicles to be electric: DCM Ashwath Narayan

Bengaluru, Feb 23 (IANS): About 50 per cent of vehicles owned by the Karnataka government will be electric in the next 2-3 years to promote e-mobility and curb pollution, Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan saud on Monday.

"We will replace 50 per cent of all petrol/diesel government vehicles with a electric version to encourage e-mobility and reduce air pollution," he said at a virtual panel discussion on 'future of sustainable mobility', held as a part of the 'Harvard-India Conference' here.

Noting that the state was ready for partnership in the e-mobility sector, Narayan said battery-charging points would be set up in high-rise buildings, at metro rail stations, malls, IT parks and apartments for powering electric vehicles, including cars and buses.

"As absence of charging points in cities and towns is a major constraint, the state government is working to increase them for promoting greater use of e-vehicles," he said.

The state government will also improve and expand the infrastructure for electric vehicles at public places, set up dedicated parks for e-cabs and making EV-charging points mandatory, said Narayan.

"Electric charging points will also be installed on state/national highways between Bengaluru and Mysuru, Chennai and other cities and towns across the state," he added.

A high-tech Karnataka Electric Mobility Research and Innovation Centre will be set up in this tech city for creating an ecosystem for e-mobility in the state, he said.

"E-vehicles will be safe, sustainable and affordable. As India is a power surplus country, EVs will improve energy utilisation," added Narayan.

The Central government has been supporting the e-mobility efforts across the country through funding research and providing a platform for design, development and demonstration of EV projects.

As a tech-savvy state, Karnataka plans to increase its market share of the digital engineering innovation economy to 50 per cent from 30 per cent, with clean tech, EVs, aerospace, med tech and construction offering opportunities to spur growth.

We cannot extrapolate the EV car's performance from an advanced country to India where the roads & other infrastructure is very much below standards! Moreover initial cost of a car is very high & will take years to recover! So it would be better off if the minister himself buys a vehicle at his own cost first & demonstrates it's efficacy on our pitiable infrastructure before using public money to buy on large scale?

I had reviewed TATA nexon Ev desperately in all the angles but one matter can't compromise that while driving few users vehicles drive mode to shifted to neutral. Let them fix first and cost shouldh be less than 10 lakhs also should be one variant not several variant.

This would be another scam. A Vehicle costing 25 lakhs will be purchased at 50 lakhs and soon be dumped. At least in India, the electric car technology is in a nascent stage with limited range, unavailable charging infra, maintenance facilities etc. But government will buy from public funds anyway! Who cares? Aam aadmi is only told about less pollution.

That's all fine.... What about Power Generation.....?????? If you use Coal for Power Generation it is going end with worst environment pollution. If you depend on Nuclear Power, it is NOT 100% Safe......In case any accident happened then it will be disaster. and Hydro Power is out of question. Bcoz of destruction of forest/Trees and we are getting less rain. Its safe to use LNG...But India is not self sufficient like Qatar or Brunei or Russia who is having largest gas fields.

Good, make electric vehicles affordable to all, just imagine if 50% vehicles in public are electric, then we can save lot of oil and save our country from pollution.

Replacing all air polluting fuel vehicles with Electric ⚡ Vehicle will be good step in right direction. Govt shouldn't stop there if genuinely serious about controlling polution. Should go one step ahead. For all Mass public transportation (MPT) construct Metros lines or Electric Railway to reduce :- polution, imported crude oil dependence, traffic and time taken for travel.
