Kaup, Feb 22: Nandikoor junction where two state highways meet has turned into an accident zone, thanks to an unscientific approach in laying this road.
The state highway which connects Padubidri-Karkala and also Mudarangady and Shirva has heavy traffic as Nandikoor has been turning into an industrial area. Thousands of heavy vehicles pass through this point. As the highway authorities have not taken suitable precautionary measures, accidents are happening here. Serial accidents happened here since a week, and a number of people who have suffered injuries, have been admitted into hospitals.
The highway passing here is quite wide. At the bend where the two highways meet, there are no humps, neither any warning boards nor circles. Therefore, vehicles which continue to drive at high speed at the junction give rise to accidents. Pedestrians who go to the industrial areas next to the road or two national banks on either side of the road have to be extremely cautious if they love their life.
This road is an important link to UPCL, a company at Kanjarakatte, and industrial units in Nandikoor industrial area. Because of the number of heavy vehicles moving here, small vehicles are facing risk. Even though the locals have reminded the concerned departments, they have not taken action. The people have urged the authorities to do something to save the people from danger faced at this junction.
Padubidri station house officer, Dileep G R, says that there is no provision to erect humps on the highways. He said that the concerned department or gram panchayat will be asked to take steps to regulate traffic after conducting spot inspection.
