Kaup: Lack of scientific approach turns Nandikoor junction into accident zone

Daijiworld Media Network - Kaup (SP)

Kaup, Feb 22: Nandikoor junction where two state highways meet has turned into an accident zone, thanks to an unscientific approach in laying this road.

The state highway which connects Padubidri-Karkala and also Mudarangady and Shirva has heavy traffic as Nandikoor has been turning into an industrial area. Thousands of heavy vehicles pass through this point. As the highway authorities have not taken suitable precautionary measures, accidents are happening here. Serial accidents happened here since a week, and a number of people who have suffered injuries, have been admitted into hospitals.

The highway passing here is quite wide. At the bend where the two highways meet, there are no humps, neither any warning boards nor circles. Therefore, vehicles which continue to drive at high speed at the junction give rise to accidents. Pedestrians who go to the industrial areas next to the road or two national banks on either side of the road have to be extremely cautious if they love their life.

This road is an important link to UPCL, a company at Kanjarakatte, and industrial units in Nandikoor industrial area. Because of the number of heavy vehicles moving here, small vehicles are facing risk. Even though the locals have reminded the concerned departments, they have not taken action. The people have urged the authorities to do something to save the people from danger faced at this junction.

Padubidri station house officer, Dileep G R, says that there is no provision to erect humps on the highways. He said that the concerned department or gram panchayat will be asked to take steps to regulate traffic after conducting spot inspection.

If you don't follow the driving rules and traffic laws accidents are bound to happen. Drivers don't know what's 'right of way ' yield/stop and go, proper way of overtaking (most of the drivers, in my opinion, are unaware of overtaking , changing lanes and turning rules) Best of all while in India, I noticed the drivers driving against the on coming traffic. Also taking short cuts at the turns or bends... most of them move to the lane meant for oncoming traffic. India has to lay dividers at every bends (to avoid the drivers from moving to the rights lane in other words shortcut) at least 15 meters before the turns and circles,

The problem is not only due to highway authorities. Most of it is because of us citizens who have absolutely no traffic sense and refuse to follow traffic rules.

Who said there are no humps? How many remember when the beautiful Padubidri-Karkala road was made like a world class highway, there were not many speed breakers or humps but now there are many on the main road. Time for speed caution & warning signs just to the junction will alert many speeding vehicles

There is a sharp turn and a busy road joining from UPCL. They could have planned properly before the highway construction.
