Byndoor: With over eight accidents in six months, Ottinene becomes notorious

Daijiworld Media Network - Byndoor (SP)

Byndoor, Jan 19: The National Highways Authority of India builds wide roads with good technology for controlling traffic and smooth travel. But at many places, because of the four-lane work, accidents and unwarranted things have been happening.

For the company which executed the highway widening project here, Ottinene area has posed a huge challenge. Initially many problems were created as the road has been laid by rigging the hillock made up mostly of clay. The hillock suffered landslides twice and it became a state level news. Later, under pressure from legislators and leaders, a smooth road was built but because of unscientific ideas, accidents have been happening repeatedly. The people expect that the National Highways Authority will undertake changes at dangerous bends of the road and make road users less prone to accidents.

When a person travels via Byndoor from the direction of Shirur, the left side road is at a higher elevation. At the slopes, they suddenly come across road bends and therefore, the drivers lose control over vehicles, and the vehicles tumble on the right side roads. As water from the hill flow down at this stretch, huge vehicles are parked by the roadside to enable drivers and cleaners to wash themselves. But they create problems for vehicles driving down the slopes. As a result, over eight accidents happened here during the last six months.

Santoshi Anand Kaikini, Byndoor police circle inspector, said that his department has brought to the knowledge of the highways authority about the unscientific road works here. He said that the officials have orally promised to attend to this issue immediately.

Steel crash guard barriers on the road medians is normally installed to avoid such incidents. From the photo, it appears that crash barrier is not installed. Secondly, drivers should reduce the speed at the hillock specially at bends. Install cameras to monitor the speed and fine the vehicle owners.
