Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 19: The budgetary allocation of Rs 1.5 crore each announced for building separate sports hostels for high school girls at ten places in Karnataka including the city for housing girl students with particular interest in sports has not been released. Therefore, the announcement has got stuck at the initial stage.

As of now, the sports hostel is located near Mangala Stadium here, where both high school boys and girls are accommodated. As per rules, girls and boys have to be provided separate hostels. Therefore, the government had decided to build additional blocks for girl students at places where the sports hostels exist now. The engineers of the department have inspected the spot and submitted project report. There is likelihood of the grant getting delayed on account of coronavirus lockdown etc.

The hostel located now can accommodate 50 persons. The new hostel building proposes to house 50 girls. It is learnt that most of the students who participate in sports activities in the district do not wish to avail of hostel facilities and they prefer to attend the activities from home. Rural students too have not shown interest in hostels. But in other districts, hostel facility is used well by students.

Pradeep D'Souza, deputy director of sports department in Dakshina Kannada, said that grant for the hostel building is expected to be received soon.
