Mangaluru, Jan 19: The plastic park project in the city was hanging fire since the last about five years. The project is part of the Export Promotion Park coming up at Ganjimath. Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB), on December 14, submitted a proposal for the park to the ministry of chemical fertilizers of the central government. The plastic park in the city is among the eight plastic parks to have been approved all over the country by the said ministry.
The polypropylene unit of the third phase unit of the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd, produces raw plastic. This is advantageous for the plastic-oriented industries which may be set up in the coast, as operational expenses will be drastically reduced. Presently MRPL has been sending raw plastic to Gujarat and Maharashtra. The fact that D V Sadananda Gowda from Dakshina Kannada district is the union minister for chemicals and fertilizers is believed to be a plus point for the prospects of the project.
