Mangaluru, Jan 18: “The police have taken into custody four persons including two women regarding a honeytrap case under Surathkal police station limits,” said police commissioner N Shashi Kumar in a press meet held at his office on Monday January 18.
“The arrested are Reshma alias Neema who works as beedi roller, Zeenath alias Zeenath Mubeen working for an insurance company, Iqbal and Abdul Khader Naseef who works as a driver and a resident of Krishnapura.
“On January 14, Reshma and Zeenath contacted the victim, a person of Kerala origin who runs a transport business. The victim was then invited to their house where Iqbal and Naseef assaulted him and threatened him. They demanded Rs 5 lac. As part of first instalment, the victim paid Rs 30,000. The accused also threatened the victim of filing rape case against him.
“Mobile phones, credit card and a Mahindra XUV vehicle were seized from the accused who were residing at Florentine apartment in Kana Katla.
“During the investigation, it has come to our notice that 5-6 people are involved in this racket. This is a clear case of honeytrap. The group is involved in other 5-6 cases as well which have taken place in the last 2-3 months.
“When there is no business, they used to modify their vehicle and contact people from Channarayapatna for illegal cattle transportation.
“In cases of honeytrap, the victim does not come forward to file complaint as it will be shame for them. I urge the victims of such cases to come forward and share details with police. We will maintain confidentiality.
“I urge apartment associations to collect details and look into them whenever giving flats on rent. If you notice any suspicious movement or any strangers entering the apartment, bring it to the notice of people. This is a dangerous development of honeytrapping. In many instances, the victims commit suicide or sell property. Hence, take all measures and inform police as well,” he said.
Regarding the sexual harassment in bus case, the police commissioner said that a complaint has been filed at the women’s police station. “Three teams have formed to probe and we have collected all the necessary information. The accused will be traced soon,” he said.
On usage of drones in functions, he said, “It has come to our notice the usage of drones in private functions. Those using drones should seek permission for licence. If not, case will be filed and drones will be seized.”
