Bantwal: Goa liquor, items worth Rs 22 lac seized - One arrested

Bantwal, Jan 16: Excise department officials on rounds upon receiving definite information at Modankap, Bantwal taluk B Mooda on January 16 intercepted a Toyota Etios car and found 50.400 litres Goa origin liquor being transported illegally in it.

The officials subsequently raided the welding shop belonging to the suspect and found 107.600 litres liquor and 34 litres beer both of Goa origin illegally stored by him. The personnel have arrested suspect Sandeep (35), resident of Vian Thota Mane, Modankap, Bantwal, registered a case and remanded him in judicial custody.

A Toyota Etios car, an Ashoka Leyland tempo and the liquor is confiscated from the suspect. The value of the vehicle and the liquor seized from him is approximately Rs 22 lac.

The raid was conducted in the leadership of excise deputy commissioner Shailaja Kote by Bantwal area excise inspector Shaikh Imran, excise deputy commissioner’s office inspector Vijay Kumar, excise sub inspector Jagannath Naika and staff. Bantwal area excise inspector registered the case.

    If you want to stop 'Liquour Smuggling' from Goa....best way to do it reduce the excise taxes in Karnataka and make it same as Goa....Nobody will smuggle Liquour from Goa then....trust me...

    This enforcement by our Excise Department is useless.....they may catch one in hundred cases...

    But here in Karnataka evry person needs Money and our Karnataka State government runs by liquor.. so they increase their price as their wish...but drunkers wil pay that much cost cuz they r in need of it.... So comparing to every State.. In Karnataka I guess more price for the liquor.. I had bought goan black n white one bottle... The cost of the bottle is 1060... That same bottle I have asked it in our state.m 2060.. 1000 rs difference for a bottle between goa n Karnataka....

    Going by the comments here; i see indirect support to this law breaker. Excise duty is a state affair and not central. Each state can decide what taxes must be levied . One can get limited liquor with permits from Goa. Moreover liquor is not essential goods so stop whining as if he was transporting medicine to save someones life. What this culprit did was unlawful. This puts businessmen like me at loss as I have to pay taxes and these smugglers make profits illegally. Going by what I hear this is not the first time he has done it. Rivalry or good police work, whatever makes such things stop must be appreciated. Why nobody stopped them from Goa border to bantwal: probably he paid bribes or used family connections. But someone caught him. Let's appreciate that. Its progress. One cant complain when police does it work.

    Dear Mr. Rajesh Pinto,
    Agree that the comments here at the face of it does seem so. No denying that law enforcement and relevant departments have done a good job. However, you would also agree that if they wanted, such confiscation can happen day in and day out with the scale and prevalence of such illegal transport and storage. That is not the case and it sounds more like an aberration.

    However, the comments are also to express concern about the huge tax on alcohol which is one of the highest in the world. A beer in India and outside India are same or sometime cheaper (even though we earn less compared to our counterparts in other countries in terms of purchase value). The tax at current estimate is in the range of 300~400%. And with a yawning gap between taxes in neighboring Goa and us, this will happen. Money flows wherever it can buy cheap. This is a basic fact. Whether you regulate it or not is a different issue.

    I have one question-- The Goa border and Karnataka border have the checkpoint. How anyone can escape from these guys and later can be arrested?

    If yes the person needs to be released and the checkpoint officers must be arrested.

    Goa with revenue from flourishing tourism industry can sustain financially without extortion in the name of excise duty/tax on alcohol. The cheaper alcohol prices further help sustain the tourism industry.

    The extraction of whatever little margin left in selling alcohol in Karnataka means that biz owners depend on such illegal transfer of cheap alcohol from Goa and other sources to sustain.

    Excise department must let some margin to the biz owners so that these illegal transfers can be avoided. Alternately, taking cue from Goa and promoting tourism to raise revenue from other sources rather than lazily depend on RTO, Sub-registrar and Excise department for its revenue.

    Clearly, competition, failed price negotiation and consequent enmity is behind this reliable tip off.

    The mystery is that how come such big consignment of liquor to Bantwal eventhough many check posts are to seize such smuggled liquor. If we bring one or two bottles they check our baggage etc. But what about this?

    In reality, one country, several taxes, slabs and complexities.

    Many Big shots enjoy this liquor freely in the evening. Criminals and thieves are bred for a long time they don't surface overnight. Only revelry between gangs reveals the identity of one group to the police and the police act saviors. Negotiations continue.

    Goa state n Union territories, have lower exise taxes, on all alcoholic beverages, ?trafficking from a heavily subsidized state to another shackled state, are extremely lucrative...This is a major flaw in our system. we do not have a uniform tax slab across India... These irregularities will take place. Gujarat is supposedly to be a dry state, yet alcoholic beverages are delivered to your doorsteps on request !!!!
