PM Modi launches world's largest vaccination drive in India

New Delhi, Jan 16 (IANS): India began the world's largest Covid-19 vaccination programme on Saturday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching the drive aimed at ending the pandemic which so far has killed 1,52,093 people in the country and ravaged the economy.

Addressing the country digitally, the Prime Minister said that India managed to make two 'Made-in-India' vaccines in a very short period which usually takes years.

Lauding the efforts of scientists who are involved in vaccine research, Modi said they deserve special praise for making these vaccines and that "the vaccines will provide us a decisive victory against the deadly pandemic".

The Drug Controller General of India earlier this month approved 'Covishield' and 'Covaxin' vaccines for emergency use. The Oxford University and AstraZeneca have developed 'Covishield', which has been manufactured in India by Serum Institute of India in Pune while Bharat Biotech has developed 'Covaxin'.

The Prime Minister further reminded people to get two doses of the vaccine, explaining that "there should be a gap of almost one month between the first and second doses".

"Only two weeks after the second dose, your body will develop the necessary strength against coronavirus," the Prime Minister said.

Noting that this kind of vaccination campaign on such a large scale has never been done in history, Modi said "India is vaccinating three crore people in its first phase of vaccination starting today and the government will bear the cost of the vaccination to be administered to healthcare workers".

In the second phase, the Prime Minister said "we have to take it to 30 crore".

"Those who are elderly, who are suffering from serious illness, will get vaccinated at this stage. You can imagine, there are only three countries in the world with a population above 300 million - India, China and US itself."

The Prime Minister launched the vaccination drive at a time when India registered 1,05,42,841 Covid infections till Saturday with 15,158 new cases in the last 24 hours, as it continued with its streak of low single-day cases. A total of 1,01,79,715 people have recovered from the disease and currently there are 2,11,033 active cases. The recovery rate stands at 96.56 per cent, while the fatality rate is 1.44 per cent.

Covid vaccination according to my opinion is the biggest fraud going to be perpetrated on the mankind. No vaccines have claimed 100% efficacy rates. Even Russian Sputnik V & US Pfizer’s vaccines claim a maximum efficacy of 92%. This means that, even if vaccinated, we are not sure whether we belong to the 92% or the 8%.

This 8% for India means 12 Crore people. According to experts, only handful of vaccines such as the ones for measles, provide lifetime immunity. Whether Covid 19 vaccines will provide lifetime immunity is unknown and no such claims have been made too.

In such a situation, whether India should go for vaccinating every individual? The cost of vaccinating every individual, even @ Rs.500 per person, will cost us US$ 9000 million Even after spending this big amount, we are not sure at an individual level, whether we belong to the 8% or 92% group. Those who are vaccinated may assume themselves to be safe and become complacent and be carriers of the virus without taking precautions. Also when there is no reliable data as to efficacy period, we also are not aware as to when the person in 92% group is going to slip into 8% category.

Hence, India should spend more on building Health infrastructure, Health education including life-style diseases and at an individual level, concentrate on healthy lifestyle and individual immunity build-up rather than running behind vaccinating every individual. Instead we should look at selectively vaccinating people in 60+age group who are more vulnerable. 51% of Covid mortalities in India are above 60 years. But above 60% of these deaths are due to co-morbidities. Hence long term solution would be concentrating on healthy lifestyle, individual immunity, making Exercise / Yoga part of daily routine, making NCC compulsory at schools..

Modi / BJP is going to use the vaccination to score political points. If Govt is going to insist on vaccination, then they should also take responsibility for the after effects, if any.

There is no vaccine in this universe which is 100% effective. A vaccine which might be effective for you might not work for me and might be deadly for someone else. We are all different and our bodies treat us different. Modi or Bjp has never asked anyone to forcefully get vaccinated it's a matter of choice, if you want it you take it else leave it all the best stay safe
