Mangaluru, Jan 15: Many are in the habit of clandestinely disposing off garbage collected at their homes, hotels etc by the roadside. Now, the local administration at Someshwar is planning to put an end to this practice. The chief officer of Someshwar municipality has planned to file police complaints against people who are turning the streets dirty by the said acts, on the basis of the registration numbers of vehicles as recorded by the CCTV cameras.
A big portion of taxes collected from the people goes towards disposal of waste. Awareness programme on the need to maintain cleanliness is held at various places often. Moreover, garbage collection vehicles conduct door to door visits to collect the waste. Still there is no decline in the cases in which waste is discarded by the roadside. As a result, many areas in Ullal, garbage has accumulated and the areas stink.

CCTV: Even though some panchayats have relied on CCTV cameras to control garbage situations, their efforts have not yielded fruitful results. Someshwar town panchayat has, as a first step, made efforts to identify the vehicles which bring garbage and throw it by the roadside. Details of the vehicles are collected and complaints have been filed with the police.
Chief officer of Someshwar municipality, Vani V Alva, says that even though house to house collection of waste is undertaken and the municipality has taken steps to keep the roadside clean, people continue to bring waste and throw the same by the roadside. She said that within a week, the vehicle which was doing this has been identified and a complaint was made to the police department.
