Mangaluru: ATM Fraud - Money withdrawn from account without consent

Mangaluru, Jan 14: In one more incident of ATM fraud, strangers have withdrawn money without the knowledge of the account holder.

Fraudsters withdrew money in different transactions on January 11 between 9.26 to 9.29 pm through an ATM from the account of a customer of the Gandhinagar branch of a bank. The total amount that is withdrawn is Rs 40,000. The account holder has registered a complaint with Cybercrime police of the city in this regard.

Similar complaints are registered with police about withdrawing cash from the branches of Gandhinagar and Urwa Store. In these incidents, strangers had withdrawn Rs 60,000 and Rs 40,000 respectively. The next day an amount of Rs 40,000 was withdrawn through the postal ATM of Kulshekar from the account of one more person.

    The fraudsters are not an ordinary brain, someone from IT knowledge and software back ground.
    Cybercrime police will surely succeed in tracing the culprits in shortest time laps.

    Why always fraudsters /culprits make Mangalore as a target? There are no other places in the world? Nigerians do fraud here why fraudsters from here can't loot outside India??

    Cynthia Kirem ,fraudesters are not only in mangalore but all over the world.They must have kept a mini camera over the console where one gives the number and a their own console during noone is there at night.so they work.When someone gives the numbers and later easy to make their own chips and draw the money.so they work .Here too such people aktiv.People should always be careful to see before they get aktiv in automats to observe if any changes or camera is placed etc.Here more automats are sprang by using gas and cassets were taken away.

    Dear Freinds,

    The bottom line is that Economic collapse and High Unemployment in Modi's New India has led to educated people resorting to crime as a last measure. If Modi - BJP continues in 2024 then educated youth will either have to sit with a begging bowl outside the new parliament or take up petty crime.

    Did they withdraw money without ATM card and PIN?
    As per my knowledge, ATM system gives money only if
    1) A valid ATM card is inserted
    and
    2) The correct pin has been entered. (the system allows you to enter wrong pin only three times, so trial and error method doesn't work)

    Then how is it possible to withdraw money without ATM and pin?

    The cyber police and news reporters should followup the insident and report what actually happened. Nowadays even an uneducated use ATM for money transactions. Because of this kind of insidents, public become panic on using ATM.

    Now a days hackers attaching card readers devices and Camara for Copying PIN. Once card reader device collected data's it is not rocket science to make duplicate card. Its better to withdraw money from busy places rather than isolated place. Normally hackers not fixing their devices in Shopping mall / busy places.

    Banks can think to provide
    1) otp varification option during atm transaction.
    2) atm pin change option through net banking/mobile banking with proper security measures.

    I think, these measures may be solutions for camera fixing/card reader insertion frauds.

    Moreover the probing agencies should clearly bring to the notice of public how actually such fraud took place. Then the public can take personalized precautions.
