Mangaluru, Jan 8: Former MLA J R Lobo alleged that Swachh Bharat Mission in the city has turned inoperative in comparison to the last few years.
Addressing media here on Friday January 8, J R Lobo said, “Mangaluru was once known for its cleanliness and was conferred with several awards in the past. Today, the situation of Mangaluru has turned worse in terms of cleanliness. We can notice that waste is being thrown in every nook and corner of the city, no proper waste disposal method is being implemented, and also, waste is not being collected on regular basis. Mangaluru was in the forefront in cleanliness which is not the case now.
“The waste collectors are on protest. Careless waste disposal methods has led to stray dog menace making the issue even worse. We never witnessed such a worse situation earlier. During the Congress government, there were certain issues which were sorted out immediately, but never reached this worse.
“Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) claims that there is no money in the treasury. There are over one lac households in the city. On an average, there should be Rs 5 crore of cess collection. If not, then it is the failure of the administration,” he said.
Corporator Shashidhar Hegde, MCC opposition leader Abdul Rauf and others were present.
