Udupi, Jan 5: “The district police department arrested serial chain-snatching accused Chandrashekhar (25) on January 3 at Kukkikatte junction. He is a resident of Mangaladevi in Mangaluru. He was arrested on the charges of nine serial theft cases that took place in the city since October 2020,” said superintendent of police (SP) Vishnuvardhan at a press meet held at SP office, Bannanje here on Tuesday January 5.
“The police have seized 172.02 grams gold and three bikes, which are worth Rs 9,38,200. Under the guidance of the SP, three different teams led by DySP T R Jaishankar, DySP of Karkala sub division Bharath Reddy and Udupi circle police inspector (CPI) Manjunath were formed to investigate.
“The accused has completed nursing course recently and was jobless. He stole a bike from a second hand two-wheeler showroom located in Kankanady in Mangaluru taking it for a test ride.
“He was involved in nine chain snatching cases under various police station limits. He stole bikes by cheating show room staffs. The cases related to the same are registered at Manipal, and Barke and Kankanady under Mangaluru police station limits. He used the stolen bikes for chain-snatching. There were nine chain-snatching cases registered under several police station limits. Four cases are registered at Udupi town station limits, two cases at Manipal, and one each at Padubidri, Kadri in Mangaluru and Mulky police stations.
“He would target single women walking in desolated places. He is also one of the accused in a robbery case registered under Pandeshwar police station limits. District police and all staffs have worked day and night in the investigation, collected CCTV footage and documents. It was actually very challenging. We will not reveal the investigation process to maintain confidentiality. People should be careful while wearing gold ornaments. If any incident of crime takes place, just call 100. It will help us trace the culprits or close all borders immediately,” he said.
Additional superintendent of police Kumara Chandra, DySP T R Jaishankar, Bharath Reddy, deputy superintendent of police of Karkala sub division Bharath Reddy, Udupi town CPI Manjunath and other staffs namely DCBI unit police inspector Manjappa D R and others, police inspector Manjunath of Manipal police station and staffs, Kaup CPI Prakash and staffs, Udupi town station police sub-inspector (PSI) Saktivelu, crime department PSI Vasappa Naik and staffs, Manipal PSI Rajshekhar and staffs, Malpe PSI Thimmesh B N and staffs, Kaup PSI Raghavendra and staffs, Padubidri station staffs, town traffic PSI Abdul Khadar and Shekhar and technical team were involved in the operation.
