Mangaluru, Jan 4: Many citizens are of the opinion that the city corporation has been a bit extra lavish in spending money for unwarranted works in the name of smart city projects. They also wonder why cant the corporation stop spending on wasteful things and divert the funds to works that are very much necessary.
Leaking effluents from an apartment complex located opposite Yeyyadi Konchady school have been flowing by the roadside on airport road since the last five years. The entire area stinks and the people find it hard to consume food in the surrounding area. Inmates of vehicles when passing this stretch are compelled to cover their noses.
A drinking water pipeline also passes under the ground where the effluents flow. As it is an old pipe, it has several holes. Therefore, water from the toilets is likely to get mixed with drinking water and the people who consume this water might suffer from serious ailments including jaundice. The local people say that the problem has arisen because of the absence of the underground drainage system connection in the apartments complex.
The people have hung a banner which has directed the people's ire at the city corporation mayor, commissioner and health officer, for cooperating with Canara Apartment in allowing the dirty water mixed with excreta to flow on the public road. Several protests were held here by the CPM, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), constructions workers union etc, demanding to resolve the problem. All the higher officials of the corporation have been alerted about the need to address the issue through letters. Petitions were also sent to the police station and human rights commission. Now postcard movement is on, said Naveen Konchady, leader of DYFI. He said that in the next measure of protest, effluents from here will be carried and poured in front of the city corporation building.
City mayor, Diwakar Pandeshwar, said that grant has been earmarked for resolving the issue of effluents flowing on the road from an apartment. He said that the works would be undertaken soon and the problem would be permanently addressed.
