Mangaluru: Police commissioner rebukes vagabonds - Warns of arrest, criminal cases

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 4: N Shashi Kumar, who has newly taken over charge of the city commissionerate, has undertaken an initiative against those who are found to be loitering around the city streets at night, creating trouble for the citizens by consuming drugs, liquor etc.

Within two days of his assuming charge of the commissionerate, the policemen undertook an operation within the limits of Barke and Pandeshwar police stations here. Over a hundred drunk people, people moving about under suspicious circumstances and those found holed up in dark corners, were rounded up. They were taken into custody, their names and addresses were taken down, and their photos were taken. They were warned and sent with their close ones, who were contacted and asked to pick the youngsters, and released by issuing a warning that if they get caught again, they will be arrested and booked under legal provisions.

He asked them to desist from sitting aimlessly in open grounds, sitting in vehicles at parks, bus stand etc, not to consume liquor and drugs or move about without purpose during late night hours etc. He asked them to reach home immediately after their work is finished.

"We had received several complaints from the people. People said that drunk people sitting near the temples, railway tracks, bar etc crate trouble for them. We were also told about people sitting together and ridiculing or passing comments about others. With the support of deputy commissioners of police, Hariram Shankar (law and order) and Vinay Gaonkar (crime), we have undertaken this operation within the jurisdiction of tow police stations. Henceforth, this operation will be undertaken regularly in all the station limits. We have identified hotspots where the drugs are consumed," the commissioner told the media. He also requested the parents to make sure that youngsters and students do not fall prey to such rackets.

Hats off to you Sir. Great initiative. It will be even more great if bars pubs and all are shut down after a certain time. Those are the places where many youngsters hang around.

These drives should be conducted off and on. Instead of loitering around these youths should do constructive work. The vehicles that they use should be checked for fake notes, drugs and vehicle ownership records. Surprising thing is the are no females.(? No gender equality here?) at least in the photographs.

My goodness. Is this Police Raj now ? What happened to democracy? Where does it say an Indian Citizen needs to go home and stay indoors at night? Where does it say you cannot wander aimlessly?

Whst does he mean by "Go home as soon as your work is finished"? Dont we have the freedom to take a stroll after dinner? Public servants must understand that we live in a Democracy. Let the law deal with nuisance makers, but generalising and making authoritative statements is simply not acceptable.

Seems like he just wanted to announce his arrival!!!

To an extent he is correct. But here he is also trying to moral police by saying go home soon after your work/school/college is over.

Will he dare to do the same to richer class people???

Consumption of liquor is legal in India.
Walking, sitting, wandering around is too legal as long as you do not cause problems to others.
The government is taking steps to open up cities 24/7 and this move of the new SP will be counterproductive.
I think an arrest for the following acts is an attack on a citizen's freedom.
"sitting aimlessly in open grounds, sitting in vehicles at parks, bus stand etc,
consume liquor, move about without purpose during late night hours."

    Give a thought on it.

Rules appreciated with such actions but it should not be temporary till your tenure. It should be a permanent rule. Earlier weekly call talks was held now it has gone over the wind. Just like a new principal new rules are implemented once the principal get transferred it goes with him. Yesterday's action was a good sign and a warning to lot of people. Similarly drunken driving is the main question to be solved immediately
